D20M bail bond for alleged Gamcel fraudsters Africa » Gambia Friday, August 05, 2011 The vacation Judge at the High Court in Banjul, Justice Emmanuel Nkea, Thursday, 4th of August 2011, granted bail to three suspects allegedly involved in the D26M Gamcel scam.
The trio, Christian Brown, a Sri Lanka national, Alhagie Bah, and Muhammed Bangura, both Gambians, are alleged to have between March and April 2011 in the Kanifing Municipality willfully caused the loss of D26, 699 334 10 bututs to Gamcel being the accrued earnings and other incidentals from Africell by illegally diverting international calls without routing the said calls through the international gateway, an act detrimental to the economy of The Gambia.
The trio filed a motion on notice seeking the High Court order to grant them bail pending the hearing and determination of the change of economic crimes against them in the High Court.
The presiding Judge, Justice Emmanuel Nkea in admitting the trio to bail disclosed that pursuant to Section 24 of the Constitution, Section 99(1) of the Economic Crimes (Specified Offences) Act, that each of the suspects be admitted to bail in the sum of D20 million in the like sums, with two Gambian sureties, one of whom must have a landed property in the Greater Banjul Area.
That the suspects must also surrender their travelling documents to their Principal Registrar of the High Court and upon satisfaction of the above condition, the applicants shall be released from custody. Author: Sidiq Asemota

Another person has taken up his place at the Hotel; a stay of 12 years at the hotel,..........hmmmmm,....he will have to have a very good charm to let him last that long.

Court orders marabout to pay over D5M compensation Africa » Gambia Thursday, August 04, 2011 One Momodou Ceesay, a marabout was yesterday, on Wednesday, 3rd August 2011 sentenced at the Kanifing Magistrates Court, presided over by acting Principal Magistrate Sheriff Tabally to pay a fine of D50, 000 in default to serve two years imprisonment and to pay a compensation of D5.7M in default to serve another ten years imprisonment with hard labour.
The convict was standing trial on the offence of obtaining money by false pretence, contrary to Section 288 of the Criminal Code. The alleged incidence occurred in 2006 in Serrekunda and diverse places within the Kanifing Municipality. According to the particulars, the accused, with the intention to defraud, obtained the sum of CFA115, 000 which is equivalent to the sum of D6, 000, 000 from one Sidy Wilane, a Senegalese, with the pretext of providing him with juju (charms) for self defence, knowing it to be false, thereby committed an offence.
