One Momodou Ceesay, a marabout was yesterday, on Wednesday, 3rd August 2011 sentenced at the Kanifing Magistrates Court, presided over by acting Principal Magistrate Sheriff Tabally to pay a fine of D50, 000 in default to serve two years imprisonment and to pay a compensation of D5.7M in default to serve another ten years imprisonment with hard labour.

The convict was standing trial on the offence of obtaining money by false pretence, contrary to Section 288 of the Criminal Code. The alleged incidence occurred in 2006 in Serrekunda and diverse places within the Kanifing Municipality. According to the particulars, the accused, with the intention to defraud, obtained the sum of CFA115, 000 which is equivalent to the sum of D6, 000, 000 from one Sidy Wilane, a Senegalese, with the pretext of providing him with juju (charms) for self defence, knowing it to be false, thereby committed an offence.

In his plea of mitigation, the marabout urged the court to temper justice with mercy, adding that he is a family man with four wives and children and that he is the bread winner of his family.
