The director of Political Affairs Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, yesterday met the vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy at State House in Banjul.

Speaking shortly after meeting VP Njie-Saidy, Amitav Benerji briefed reporters about his discussion with the vice president highlighting the long standing relationship between the Commonwealth and The Gambia. He also dliated on the importance the organisation attaches to democracy and development.

He further explained that their meeting took place within the context of an important event that the Commonwealth Secretariat is organising in Banjul. “This is a media and economic development workshop. I just have the privilege with my delegation to meet Dr Njie-Saidy, during which together we reviewed a whole range of things in which the Commonwealth and The Gambia cooperates,” he stated.

“We have been able to assist The Gambia in different areas of activities and we value that cooperation. And we also discussed ways in which we can continue that collaboration,” he remarked. Banerji said he equally used the opportunity to brief Dr Njie-Saidy on the preparations of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting taking place later this year in Australia.

He explained further that the ongoing Media and Development Workshop is a regional conclave that focuses on the role of media in promoting development as well as media in democratic societies. Commenting on the Secretariat’s support to the government of The Gambia in the country's march towards development, Banerji said that they have been able to assist the country in areas such as the judiciary, by providing judges and prosecutors, as well as the provision of attestations to the Ministry of Agriculture among others.

“As I mentioned earlier, we are currently holding a media development workshop, which will also involve capacity building for journalists in The Gambia. We have helped in the past the electoral commission, and hope to look for ways in which we can further collaborate with the Independent Electoral Commission,” he added.

Gender activist
In another engagement, Juliet A Sylva alias Queen Love, a poet, writer cum activist, who has been advocating for an end to gender based-violence and other domestic violence in local communities across the country also called on Dr Njie-Saidy at State House.

Sylvia also used the opportunity to present some CD and DVD cassettes to the Gambian leader through the vice president as a way of appreciating his unrelenting efforts towards the empowerment of women in the country. Speaking to reporters shortly after meeting Dr Njie-Saidy, Sylva said she is an ambassador of love and being a survivor of domestic violence, also speaks about love in the family and communities as a whole.

She lamented that families are being destroyed on daily basis, noting that it is not only about men beating their wives. “A lot of men are suffering silently and maybe a women will talk to her friends about the problems at home. But the man will never go out there and say that my wife is bullying me or slapping me because you will look foolish to other men. So men too suffer silently,” she added.

She disclosed that she also had her own unpleasant experience when she ended up marrying a man that nearly killed her. “So this is something that is very serious and does not affect adults only, but children too. Children are our leaders tomorrow and we want to show them that we love them,” she stated, and further disclosed that she also counsels men and women free of charge.

Sylvia hinted that she wants to help the family as well as build a centre that will counsel prostitutes, in order to help them become better citizens. “Most of them when you talk to them, they say my father or mother is poor and because of that I have to venture into this to help them. You don't have to sell your bodies to help your parents,” she stated.
