She made this remark recently during a one-day symposium organised by the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA), as part of activities marking the commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, with the theme: ‘Drug abuse situation in The Gambia’. The programme was held at the KMC Multi-Purpose Hall along Jimpex Road in Kanifing.
According Madam Mendy, of recent, the west African coast is being used as a transit point in illicit drug trafficking especially Cocaine and Heroine. She said that without proper intervention it will destroy our youths, affect the country’s socio-economic development and hinder development projects as well.
.
She further explained that socially, the menace of drug abuse is destructive not only to our physical and mental health, but it also tears societies apart and that it knows no boundary. “Drugs cause economic breakdown, corruption and violence; example hooliganism, terrorism, prostitution, arm robbery, murder, road accidents, among others,” she highlighted.
