President Yahya Jammeh has underscored the importance of petroleum resources in the social and economic transformation of the country, noting that this needS not to be over-emphasised.

In a statement read on his behalf by Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, Vice President and Minister for Women’s Affairs, at the official ceremony inaugurating the Gambia National Petroleum Company (GNPC) service station, President Jammeh said exploration activities in the past have indicated The Gambia’s endowment in petroleum resources and, therefore, several efforts have been spearheaded in preparing ourselves for a successful take-off.

He stated that the enactment in 2004, of a modern petroleum law as a framework for exploration, development and production; the adoption of a model petroleum license that provides the basis for negotiations with international oil companies interested in investing in exploration and production, among others, are examples of the measures put in place so far for the efficient management of the upstream petroleum sector.

According to him, the first service station built by the GNPC demonstrates that the national petroleum, which was created in 2003 as the business arm of government in the oil and gas sector, is capable of becoming a successful oil company of international standard.

He added that the occasion was further testimony that the creation of the GNPC, as an added institutional strengthening measure, has been a well thought-out plan necessitated by the international best practices of ensuring that the national oil company is set up to become that commercial outfit that would represent Government’s interest in the petroleum business.

"With the necessary staff complement, requisite skills and dedication, the GNPC can be transformed into an international oil company, the business of which will transcend the boundaries of this country," he further stated.

He commended the Government and people of the Republic of China on Taiwan for the strong support it has provided not only for government’s development agenda in downstream petroleum activities, but also in petroleum exploration and development programs, at the upstream level.

Tenneng Ba Jaiteh, the Deputy Minister of Petroleum, said the project including the civil works, the canopy, underground storage tanks, fuel pumps and the totem cost about D23 million and was financed jointly by the government of the Republic of China on Taiwan and the Gambia government.

According to her, the service station is the first of several others to be constructed throughout the country.

"This petroleum service station before us today is one hundred percent Gambian-owned, hence the slogan "Nyor Kor Mom". The project has been conceptualized, designed, constructed and supervised by Gambians," she added.

The deputy minister said the Ministry of Petroleum and the GNPC are well aware of the competitiveness of the petroleum marketing business, as clearly manifested by the proliferation of service stations, particularly in the Greater Banjul Area.

"Being a new entrant in this business, GNPC has decided to come into the show with a difference by firstly building structures that would beautify the environment and, secondly by being very much concerned with environmental issues," she further stated.

Sarane Hydara, Engineering Consultant, said the service station has been designed and supervised to the highest standards in terms of safety by selecting leak detecting pipes for the supply of fuel from the tanks to the pumps.

The Managing Director GNPC, Momodou O.S Badjie, thanked President Jammeh for establishing GNPC and approving this project.

He also commended the Government and people of Taiwan for their support in strengthening and building the capacity of GNPC, and for their help in the financing this project.

Others speakers included the Lord Mayor of KMC, Yankuba Colley and GNPC board member Fafa Sanyang.

The ceremony was chaired by Momodou Saidy, press officer at the Office of the President.

This reminds me of the Poem: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1798:

"Water, water, every where,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, every where,
Nor any drop to drink".

Oh! no, Moe, I'm not your KNEEJAI (Uncle ). Go siphon your own gas where ever you can find it,
though you'll never find any at some ghostly upstream/downstream petroleum facility.
Sorry I can't help you. Go levy GNPC for your justly earned gas ration, like the free water in the pond
(daake).................................................................................................................................LL!

Jawara just hit some dry river beds during his early explorations but "Water Water" gas is there Bro.........................................Peace

sometimes when people talk about serious things some would try and make a joke out of it.
Gambia is in a mess and this is a fact Jammeh must go for he has ran out of even lies much more to talk of ideas.

Let's start tapping then, or is HE supressing the finds, to benefit HIM (his imperial majesty) after
Gambia's dissolution? I don't think Senegal will ever relinquish Cassamance from their domain.
Let the rivers and seas of oil flow, as you claim, to the people it belongs to, the Gambian people,
and stop the delaying tactics. No more naughty schemes. It's futile, and will never be tolerated...LL!

Discovery and prospects of oil in Gambia is the biggest lies story. It is unfounded. Don't get near it. Let Jammeh stop there with those chicken tales.

We know the game of TIME BUYING. No more of it captain Jammeh

SBO oh my god small dembish "Yaw komm wengg fu toy nga Takk" well if kitab decides to lay the carpet we can meet on the landing strip for I will be coming a different route, Look if you don't build the right foundations even if it rained oil in Gambia and the Gutters in Banjul had flowing oil, it will not benefit you. It's called black gold for a reason, I know them serere, wollof boys when ever you cook oily benachin they will do whatever it takes to play Mr nice guy, ask kitab about the "Benachin Syndrome". Yes I seen the CD and Yes it's been too long but also note Gambiansd were sent to study petroleum engineering for more than 10 years now, have you heard of "Nyoko Momm" yes it's indeed our's Gambian owned and operated, It takes time to implement things and it is a worthy initiative and I doubt the CD was empty. I will change your name to "Boy Benachin" small dembis, With this oil your cousins don't have to be Mboyo anymore, not just gas but jet fuel, petrol, gas oil, natural gas, and all, Just imagine the emerging industries in plastics and lotions not to mention other bi products, If you don't put your mind to it you just gonna be dreaming, Invest in your home town small d.........................................................................Peace

Moe i would have love to sit with you the hole night `bangn lal`just to debate with you. I know you are the type of guy that would always against the motion. Jammeh likes people who blindly support him and you are one of them. The palmoil , vegoil and cocoanutoil and any oil , the ramadan is coming we need oil.

I really don't hear or see Jammeh to believe in his rhetoric dembis aka "Boy Benachin", I came up with this assertion after my experiences, the reality is yes we need palmoil, vegoil and coconut oil due to the upcoming skyrocketing pricce on these commodities, Palm oil , Coconut oil, and Vegoil are not biproducts of Petroleum, Gambians refuse to farm and the children of farmers and Massongs wanna be government officials making 10 times less than they are capable of making. If we decide to import the listed products well dembis do the math after procuring , shipping, storage and distribution , How much the average Gambian will be charged. The most basic things we import so not only are we screwed but everyday we will keep hearing Touby crying sky rocketing prices for commodities, and yeah it is not the Governments fault.BTW if there is a "BangLAL" toubab will not drink first second or third we will "Jalaley" him and make him really inadequate, He can eat the Mboom if he wants it.......................................Peace
