“The Gambia is a Heavily Indebted Poor Country” More Than D900 Million for Debt Servicing Wednesday, July 13, 2011 The Secretary General of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) Mr Halifa Sallah has said that The Gambia is a Heavily Indebted Poor Country as a result of dependence on loan for development projects. The former NADD standard bearer in the 2006 presidential election made this remarks Sunday July 10 at Nustrat Junction while addressing a mass political meeting attended by cheering members, supporters and sympathizers. Misuse of funds He also told the gathering that the Government of The Gambia bought Mariatou’s Beach Hotel, a five star hotel at a tune of D400 million, adding that this amount could have been invested in the groundnut sector for the Ministry of Agriculture to purchase the groundnuts of farmers. More loan amid scarcity of financial resources The revered politician further said that The Gambia should spend more than D900 million dalasis for debt servicing. He revealed that the airport is a D100 million loan, pointing out that the Arch 22, Coastal Road, Brikama-Mandina Road among others are constructed from loans. “The interest attached to these loans should be paid from the coffers of the nation that come from tax paid by the people,” Sallah noted. The APRC government according to him is facing scarcity of financial resources and only relies on tax and loans to manage the affairs of the country, which is not sustainable. Produce of women gardeners Halifa Sallah said the garden produces that the toiling women of the country grow could be exported to developed countries who are seriously in need of organic food. He said this will bring income for the country. He went on to explain that perishable garden crops are cultivated by women only to rot amid the absence of storage facilities and lack of viable market outlet. On ITC Mr. Sallah said that the International Trypernotolerance Centre, ITC had a livestock project geared towards promoting cross-breeding of the Ndama cattle in order to produce quality milk. Instead of the government concentrating on such important project the land of ITC in Kerr Sereign is now earmarked for the construction of a hotel the APRC regime said would be able to employ almost 10,000 people. Unemployment and its scourge According to Sallah, about 300,000 students should graduate from school and the dilemma is where they would get employment. He told a story of a proverbial family in which the family head had a very hardworking wife who mothered three sons for him. He narrated: “One of the sons went overseas for greener pastures and since then no one heard of him. The second son braved the high seas on the perilous journey to the West to keep the heads of the suffering family above water and got drowned at sea. And the last son who remained in the country left no stone unturned to find a job but to no avail, he got frustrated and end up being a liability in society. He was one day caught in possession of illicit substances. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to jail.” Vote: power and voice The PDOIS secretary general said that the vote of citizens is their power and voice and not acquiring one or utilizing it purposefully would render them powerless and voiceless. He added that people who exchange their voter’s card for money and succumb to any form of

Sallah is great. He is providing debt info, objection and solution. Slowly, Gambians are learning what is the proper way for political participation. Great leader. |
diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.
Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

turk, you are taking a stand on something, instead of asking a question or posting insults, not in the posting that you didn't understand, in other words has someone made a copy of your identity and posted their own, pretending to be you, where in fact they are a copy. Are you only one person turk or an original and a copy,ie two people ? |
