1. National News : PDOIS Holds Community Sensitisation Meetings APRC government has lost the reason to continue at the helm – Halifa Sallah
2. National News : PDOIS COMMUNITY SENSITISATION MEETINGS - NADD NATIONAL ASSEMBLY MEMBER, SIDIA JATTA SPEAKS AT THE RALLY
3. DAILY NEWS “This Year’s Election Means Change” Says Halifa Salllah
A SELECTION OF EXTRACTS;
"He dismissed the clamour of development under the APRC government by exposing its indebtedness, with a total debt of 22 billion dalasi. He likened the situation to a foolish man who took a loan from a bank only to marry a new bride and engage in festivities, and when it was time to repay the loan he could not because he did not invest it in any profitable venture. He pointed out that The Gambia is ranked as a heavily indebted poor country (HIPC) that had to appeal to donors for debt relief. He said Gambia government is indebted to the Banks to the tune of 7 Billion dalasi, adding that since the banks mop up their vaults to purchase treasury bills interest rates become high and access to credit for the private sector become limited. He also referred to the high proportion of loan repayment derived from a budget of 4,500 million dalasi and a budget deficit of 587 million dalasi, which merely increases the indebtedness.
While showing the disparity between the producer price of 8000 dalasi per ton and a world market price of 36,000 dalasi per ton, Halifa said if for 17 years the APRC government cannot bring the farmers out of poverty to prosperity, then it has lost the reason to continue at the helm.
He contrasted the policy of the APRC government of relying on taxation to generate income to that of a PDOIS of using public funds to invest in the productive sectors such as fishing trawlers, light industry and agricultural equipment. One portion of the wealth will be re-invested, another portion used for social services and the third portion used as personal income. He gave as an example how D400 million from the social security fund which was invested in the purchase and refurbishment of Ocean Bay Hotel could have been utilized for investment in the productive sector to generate wealth. His host of examples included putting fishing trawlers into Gambia waters and creating factories to provide employment to Gambian youths, men and women. "
"Because of the lack of a level playing field and the amendment of the constitution to preempt a second round of voting were less than 50 percent of the votes is acquired, Halifa said that is important that the opposition be united with one candidate clear the mess and create a level playing field."
”If you know yourself you have self esteem and dignity. You become empowered.”
Sidia "said the Gambian people fought for Independence and achieved it. That the Gambian Nation became sovereign but our representatives who should have been servants, trustees to enlighten us to become sovereign people became our rulers and turned us into pawns to be tossed here and there."
"He said the irony of the Gambian Nation is that we have a Sovereign Nation without a Sovereign People. He said the Chief Executive of the Present administration would stand up and tell us that he will rule over us whether we like it or not; and that any people who do not vote for him and his party would not see development and we accept it."
"Sidia said people are subjected to inhumane and degrading treatment such as the witchcraft fiasco where men and women were captured, humiliated, tortured which led to some lost of lives. He said Halifa Sallah had to sacrifice his life and freedom to put a stop to it. Sidia said as voters we should have power and a voice. He said it is our votes that put the President, NAMS and Councillors into Representative Institutions."
But why don’t we ask ourselves. “Are they representing us as we wish them to represent us?” FOROYAA
"For Sidia Jatta, all what the opposition need to do is to work hand in glove and dislodge the APRC regime."
"You have the power to make a change,” he told supporters amid clapping and cheering."
"The Wuli West National Assembly member ostracized the high cost of living in the country describing it as unprecedented."
“The former regime was accused of corruption and flamboyant life style. But what we are witnessing today is far worse today than what the former regime did, he said"DAILY NEWS

Thanks to the cook and disher, Kobo. The most glaring beauty of this is that Jammeh has failed to send everyone to sleep. Thanks to the eternal vigilance of PDOIS that they have caught the thief on closed circuit. |

DAILY NEWS Sidia Blames Gambia’s Failure on Lawmakers Says they Failed the Nation
"Friday, July 15, 2011
A veteran Gambian politician and National Assembly member for Wuli West constituency, Sidia Jatta on Sunday, July 10, 2011 blamed Gambia’s failure on the National Assembly of The Gambia, saying that parliamentarians have failed the nation.
Jatta who described some of the assembly members as sycophants and rubberstamps Said: “National Assembly members are responsible for the stagnation of progress of this country.
Sidia was speaking at a mass political rally held at Nusrat Junction in Bundung organised by People’s Democratic Organisation for independence and Socialism (PDOIS).
“There are National Assembly members who do not even contribute during debates in the House as lawmakers who should scrutinise every bill before adoption,” he said at his party’s former stronghold.
He said the meeting is a non-partisan meeting but a consultation to salvage The Gambia from bad governance.
According to him, the extravagant life of the ruling APRC government surpasses that of the former PPP government.
“The current government has chided the former regime for all sorts of financial indiscipline but the current president is receiving D52, 000 as monthly salary, which has tripled the salary of a medical doctor,” he said.
“Imagine a medical doctor who would try to be alert up to odd hours in the night for any emergency that requires quick response.”
The veteran politician and the longest serving opposition parliamentarian in the administration of the APRC said leadership is not a position of privilege, but of sacrifice to serve the common and legitimate interest of the nation.
On the coalition
Sidia said the voter apathy of the 2006 presidential election was attributed to failure of various opposition parties to remain united under NADD.
In order to avert the trend, he said Agenda 2011 is formulated as a programme that gives opportunity to the people to choose a leader for the most talked about opposition alliance for the forthcoming presidential election.
“To have a standard bearer who would be the presidential candidate of the alliance, he or she must be the choice of the people so as to effect the desired change of government and system,” Jatta noted.

FOROYAA NATIONAL NEWS UPDATE "The People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) has been holding community sensitization meetings at different places starting from Banjul at the junction of Mosque Road and Lancaster Street on Friday 8 July. There were meetings on subsequent dates at LatriKunda/Dippa Kunda off Lat Kumba Lowe, Bundung Six Junction, New Jeshwang - Kandiba , Brufut, London Corner and Kunkujang Keitaya, the latest of which was held on Friday, 22 July.
At all these meetings, messages are being transmitted to raise the political awareness of the Gambian electorate to know their entitlements, powers, rights and duties as sovereign citizens, the performance of the APRC government and the need for a transitional arrangement after the APRC to the building of the foundation of a new democratic non partisan political dispensation that would user in a genuine multiparty system by making the state and non governmental media accessible to all political parties and civil society organisations with divergent views and guarantee the sovereign people of the Gambia, the constitution, laws and institutions that are necessary to promote their liberty, dignity and prosperity."
"Concluding, Halifa told the gatherings, which comprised mainly of young people and women, to ask the other opposition parties to equally make a public declaration of their positions regarding the question of a united front during the November 24 and how it could be established."
"Mr. Ousman Sillah, who chaired some of the meetings, called on the people particularly the youth folk to be interested in politics as it determines life or death, a better future or a bleak one. He advised the people to be open-minded and make it a duty to go to every political meeting of any party, be it the APRC or the opposition, to hear and ask about what they have for the people in terms of promoting their liberty, dignity and prosperity."
"As is always the case, in each of these PDOIS meetings, the people were asked to come forward with their questions, contentions of contributions. The Foroyaa shall cover some of the questions and answers in subsequent issues.""
