Officials of the Office of the Ombudsman, led by their boss, Alhaji B Sowe, on Saturday held a brief sensitisation for village heads, locally called alkalolu, in the North Bank Region (NBR), on the roles and functions of the Office of the Ombudsman in the society, promotion of good governance and the protection of people’s rights, at a meeting held at the Farafenni Library.
Speaking at the meeting, the Ombudsman, Alhaji Babou Sowe, told the gathering that his office is a high level office, independent of government and any political party, that they receive complaints from aggrieved persons against government agencies or officials and that anyone could lodge complaints to the Ombudsman. He explained that after receiving complaints, the Office of the Ombudsman does investigate the complaint.
Among their functions, he said are to investigate the functioning of the Public Service Commission, injustices, corruption, abuse of power, discrimination, maladministration, mismanagement and unfair treatment, among others in society. According to the Ombudsman’s boss, his office gives citizens adequate opportunity to test the legality and fairness of any administrative decision.
He noted that the office has the power to investigate, recommend corrective actions, issue reports, and enforce orders. He thanked the alkalolu for their, dedication and commitment towards the advancement of good governance at all levels. Sowe finally pointed out that his office attaches great importance to the advancement and protection of all individuals as well as their protection against discrimination and injustice.
The chief of Illiassa District, Ebrima Ansu Tamba Jammeh, expressed delight at having attended the meeting, adding that it would consolidate the ties between the Office of the Ombudsman and the rural people in the course of national development, as well as enhance trust and confidence on the part of the people, thereby setting the pace for active popular participation in national development.
Sait Gaye, the acting chief of Sabach Sanjal District, hailed the efforts of the Ombudsman and called for collective participation and involvement in key decision-making processes. He called on the alkalolu to support the Ombudsman in promoting the welfare of the people and in protecting their rights. The alkalo of Jumansar village in Illiassa Constituency, Kalilu Jadama, shared similar sentiments at the meeting.

What is the Ombudmans going to do about this case or is everything just a show. Last week it was the Alkaloo's and it was called sensitizing them, Here is a real life scenario Mr Sowe, What is your office going to do to remedy this SITUATION...................................Peace

The Gambian Ombudsman Mr Sowe needs to be made aware that there are Labor laws protecting the rights of these employee's and The role of the Ombudsman is to ensure that after investigating the circumstances leading to their dismissal, he should be able to recommend remedies ranging from filing a law suit against the Atlantic Seafood company or negotiating their return to work. Since the Ombudsman is empowered to resolve theses issues, The office should atleast be equipped with a Team of attorneys whether 3 or 5 depending on the NEED factor.
If the Ombudsmans office feels that they have no case they still have to recommend that the employee seeks redress from the courts but in a case as clear as The Atlantic Seafood company, their total disregard for the labor laws is a testament of how Employers view Gambians especially Foreign based businessmen, it is obvious and evidently clear that their employment was ended based on organizational restructuring, The Ombudsman should be able able to file Lawsuits for wrongful termination of employment and discrimination suits on behalf of the alleged victims and to adjudicate claims of discrimination depending on the circumstances at no cost to the VICTIMS. It's simply amazing that after complaining they were removed and not allowed at their place of employment, it is against the law to retaliate against an employee for reporting cases of abuse and DISCRIMINATION. It is also illegal to discriminate against a person because the person complained about discrimination, filed a charge of discrimination, or participated in an employment discrimination investigation or lawsuit. Somebody needs to tell the Gambian Ombudsman that if he cannot commit to his role he needs to give up the Position to someone more competent. Left to me alone I will settle this case at 1.5 Million for each complainant without looking back. These are Nobody's and somebody NEEDS to represent them or ensure that their rights are not trampled upon.
Stage 2 get a court order to freeze/monitor and investigate the ssets of The Atlantic Seafood company to ensure that they actually adhere to the court rulings at all COST ........................................Peace
