‘Lets Use Investigative Skills as Journalists to Uncover Deyda’s Killers

By Saikou Jammeh
Monday, June 27, 2011

Mr Madi M.K. Ceesay, publisher of The Daily News has slammed as ‘failure’ the inability of Gambian journalists to use their investigative skills as journalists to uncover the killers of veteran journalist Deyda Hydara.
The former GPU president who was tasked to speak on the successes and failures of Gambian Press Union (GPU) at its triennial Congress also pointed out: “The same goes for Chief Ebrima Manneh.”
With Gambia government’s inept investigation so far fruitless, murderers of Deyda Hydara, co-founder and publisher of The Point, a leading independent newspaper remain unknown since 2004.
And the whereabouts of Ebrima Chief Manneh, a senior reporter of pro-government Daily Observer newspaper remains unknown ever since his disappearance in 2006, even though it was established by ECOWAS Court that he was whisked away by state security agents.
Both colleagues have gone, Mr Ceesay said.
“We should be able to use our investigative skills as journalist and uncover these cowards. Is a failure,” he added.
He added: “As a union we also fail to set up a self regulatory body to take care of our humanely mistakes. It’s long overdue and something needs to be done about that, the sooner the better.”
Founded in 1978 by a group of journalists, Gambia Press Union is the umbrella body of Gambian journalists.
On the successes, Mr Ceesay said, the most outstanding achievement that GPU as an organization is proud of is the maintenance of its democracy.
“Since 1978 when it was founded there were regular congresses where members take major decision, as who should lead them,” he said.
He also hailed GPU for the success in having the government repeal the Media Commission Act with its draconian provisions and repressive measures.
Capacity building of several journalists, availability of a printing press, are all success the Gambia Press Union was able to attain, Mr Ceesay said.
“The Gambia Press Union had always stood firm its ground and never allows to be derailed from track since 1978. The GPU had and continuous to stand for the welfare of its members and beyond.
“Once a journalist, is facing difficulties, whether you a card holder or not, whether one is a Gambian or not, once you are a journalist GPU always play its role in the defense of the journalist and the profession.

Daily News thus far is one of the few news outlets that has the capacity to embark on such a mission "Investigative skills" is lacking in many quarters and NOT TO BE expect from the NEWSBLOGS, be it Freedom , Gainako or Kakatarr Newpaper, Gambian Journalist will have no option but to disown these terrorist unless its all part of the scheme of things. We expect professionalism and the Liars in cyberspace know little about that. The GPU needs to disown the GPU-USA and all clandestine organizations......................................Peace
