Gambiabev,African politics "works" in a different way to western politics,Dean Barrett is a diplomat, what else could he say ? it has been discussed here on bantaba in cyberspace that maybe a western model of democracy would not work in Africa and are there any alternatives to our model ?.A satisfactory answer was never arrived at.Tribalism and nepotism is endemic in Gambia and the concept of the best man (or woman !) for the job is never considered as a choice.
Toubab, but racism is also endemic in the west but it doesn't stop Barack Obama from becoming president in the US and David Lammy, a minister in the UK.
I think the issues are more about what gambiabev said than anything else.

Who mentioned raceism ? unfortunately us whities get this sort of reverse discrimination thrown at us all the time. Nyarikangbanna if you want to start a discussion on raceism start a new topic don't try to derail an exising topic

Toubab, all am saying is that all societies have their own type of prejudices and this sometimes don't sit well with what needs to be done to promote common good. Yes, in africa it is tribalism but the west also have theirs and it is called racism.
My other point is that these prejudice 'isms can be fought back to give way to sanity and that is why I alluded to BARACK Obama being a president of a western power and also David Lammy, one time minister in the UK government. In other words, if racism is becoming less a hurdle in western politics ( that is not say it is no longer a hurdle for the ethnic minorities), tribalism can also be less a hurdle in African politics.
I am not interested in talking about racism. I call all racists at my work place 'scums' in their own faces. That is how I get them to gain sanity.
If you don't like the comparism, maybe you shouldn't talk about tribalism. That way, there will be nothing to compare. And by the way, I do welcome your comment on tribalism.

That I am pleased about , but you missed the point entirely "the concept of the best man (or woman !) for the job is never considered as a choice." (OK I will insert the word "almost in front of "never" ) due to the reasons I gave, that is a fact, it is also a fact that raceism exists in the UK and in all other countries and communities there are people who do not like others who are not like them ,maybe because of colour, or the fact that their eyes are not round,or maybe because they have brown eyes,or big noses, it exists, and will probably exist for a very long time. It is not in any ones interest to select someone for a job who is not the best person from the applicants who applied,if you select someone who knows nothing about the job they should do and has no interest in doing the job, except to get money and he gets the job because he is some big boss's cousin, then, that's not right and things will go wrong.

Lessons for the Opposition - Chew on This
"Ousainou Darboe, and I hope other opposition party leaders, will see this latest developments as sufficient reasons to boycott the coming elections - elections that have already been won by Yahya Jammeh by encouraging the IEC to conduct a bogus voter registration exercise and deliberately limiting the period of time, which is woefully inadequate for political parties to conduct an effective national campaign.
To continue to legitimize Gambian presidential elections by continuing to pretend that they are free and fair only prolongs the life of a regime that is illegitimate and must be replaced immediately.
Anything short of total boycott of the 2011 presidential elections is to prolong the agony of the Gambian people."A.Koroma |
