Friday, June 24, 2011 The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has now completed the general voter registration exercise. The 2011 electoral cycle calendar has already been revealed. The ball now lies in the court of the political parties to prepare their timberland boots for the forthcoming political race. By now political parties are strengthening local structures and intensifying the enlightenment of the people about their ideologies and plans for future developments in order to win votes.
However the approach of transforming awareness creation into votes is a fundamental policy issue tearing the Gambian opposition apart. Whilst an alliance of political parties against the Jammeh administration is seen by political commentators in the country as the only move that can pose a challenge to the APRC; the opposition is divided as to how such an alliance should be formed, which political party should join the other or whether such a merger is necessary. These conflicts of ideology distancing the Gambia opposition from their ultimate goal can largely be attributed to the experience of the defunct National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) and to a larger extent the ever increasing popularity of the Gambian leader.
Speaking to a group of anxious journalist yesterday 23rd June 2011 at the IEC headquarters shortly after the Commission’s press conference, the leader of the National Reconciliation Party (NRP) Hamat NK Bah endorsed the IEC’s general registration exercise as free and fair, adding that they are grateful that this time around political parties were allowed to have registration agents at the registration centres. He noted that these agents helped his party a great deal and they are now waiting to file objections at the revising courts. “As far as the NRP is concerned, the IEC has done a great job; the registration is free and fair. I can rate them 75% even though we have objections to make at the rising courts,” he stated.
On the possibility of an opposition alliance against the APRC in the forthcoming elections, the NRP strongman was clear and direct in ruling out such a possibility, “The NRP is not interested and will not join any party to form an alliance, parties that want to join us are however welcome. In fact I can tell you from today that I am going to contest the presidential election under the NRP ticket,” Hamat disclosed. Asked how the NRP can win the election all alone, Hamat noted that he would break a record this coming election, as the youth, farmers and women of the country are behind him. He however declined to state the tactics that would make Gambians rally behind him, saying he is keeping those tactics to himself for now.
Halifa Sallah, the secretary general of the Peoples Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) and spokesperson for the defunct NADD shares a different view from the NRP leader. He declined to comment on the IEC’s conduct of the generation voter registration, saying his party is studying the exercise in conjunction with the complaints received and would issue a statement to that effect to declare whether the just concluded registration exercise was credible or not. On the faith of the opposition, Halifa Sallah said ‘Agenda 2011’ is the only solution for opposition. According to him, the agenda transcend political parties and seeks to provide a new vision to consolidate a new phase of national sovereignty to be backed by continental policies. He explained that this new vision is necessary because the realities of today show that Africa needs governments that are micro nationalists in character.
He also stated that the agenda further calls for an alliance among the opposition parties and Gambians have to decide who should lead that alliance, and that the programme of the alliance would set the country through a transition the period which should be decided by Gambians. Sallah went on to reveal that consultations and dialogue with regards to the agenda are already in progress but the choice is for Gambians to make. Such differences in strategy show that the opposition are yet to stand on a common platform to challenge the 17-year-rule of the APRC. With barely four months to the presidential elections, the feasibility of an opposition alliance leaves much to be desired, yet the wave of the country’s political currents manifest that individual parties are not even the agenda of the APRC since they pose no threat whatsoever to the ruling party.
APRC’s stand While the opposition politicians are battling among themselves on the way forward, the ruling APRC is consolidating its popularity among the people and gearing for another landslide victory. Samba Gagigo is the administrative sectary of the ruling party. Also speaking to journalists at the IEC complex shortly after the press conference, he emphatically stated that nothing can stop his party from sweeping the polls once again. He said this is obvious as Gambians are fully conscious of the fact that the APRC government since coming into power has demonstrated that it is a servant of the people and since then has not departed from that mission. He also cited the numerous development projects brought about by the leadership of President Jammeh as indications of the commitment of his party to the progress of the country. Gagigo also expressed satisfaction with the just concluded registration, and commended the IEC for a job well done.

Quite right I am not, but to observe the goings on with the "opposition" it's totally obvious that they will never agree and it's just like a circle without end. I thought the video contained all the elements of the parties noise and bluster getting nowhere ! sorry boys. I know that this bantaba is your platform, but you have to look at the facts of the situation and accept the obvious, sorry !
