One of the first things the new president of liberia did was to make rape a criminal offence.
Rape is still not a crime in some African countries, can anyone name an african country where it is and can woman take men to court. for some the family will not support them for it is consider a shameful thing.

I have learnt somethng new today. Thanks Jambo!
I didn't realise that some countries in Afica don't recognise rape.
In UK rape by a stranger is recognised. 'Date rape' or rape within marriage are recognised...but very difficult to prove a case.

I went to bed last night feeling sad after a news report about children in India working 10 hour days in a match factory for a £1 a week.(What kind of world do we live in?) Then I wake up this morning and read this. Women and children need the protection of the law......protection against the exploitation of men. (or should I say SOME men?)

The concept of rape in Africa does not extend to married couples. This is very new on the continent and cannot be intorduced as legistlation not in the next 2000 years. It is understandable if it occurs between others but not married couple.

2000yrs?? what do you mean. i would accept that it might diifcult to prove and the society favours women but i'm sure legislation is already in place dealing with these things to some extent. it wouldn't escape women's bureau.

Africa is a big place and we mustn't generalise. some countries like S.Africa , Kenya,North Africa are not are the same level as the rest of the countries.

Rape is a crime indeed, also when a woman is raped by her husband. Nobody, male or female, has the right to violate the body of another human being, male or female. Kondorong, i hope this was a typing error and you meant to say '20 years' instead of '2000' - but even 20 years is much, much too long.

Gambiabev, of course a Gambian woman can refuse her husband sex if she is not in the mood. That doesn't mean he has to rape her. He can go outside, smoke a cigaret and think 'better luck next time'. I am sure there are numerous Gambian couples where it works this way.

Also, i have seen a lot of sturdy and stronglooking Gambian women who were bossing their husbands around in the family compound. And let's hope that, in case the husband is of the primitive type that thinks his wife is his property, the always-present family members will step in.

The thinking is the same from east to west Africa. Infact, women have more rights in West Africa than anywhere else on the continent. In parts of East Africa they cannot own land.
