Police use tear gas to disperse demonstrators against changes to Senegal’s election law
By Associated Press, Published: June 22

DAKAR, Senegal — Police used tear gas Wednesday to disperse citizens demonstrating against a proposed change to Senegal’s electoral law that would make it easier for the country’s aging president to be re-elected and to pass on power to his unpopular son.

Private radio station Radio Futurs Media, or RFM, said the protesters were beaten back in Place de l’Independance, the largest square in the capital’s downtown district, in the suburb of Pikine, and in the town of Kaolack in the country’s interior.

Anger is building in this normally stable country on Africa’s western coast because the proposed constitutional amendments are seen as designed to make it easier for 85-year-old President Abdoulaye Wade to be re-elected by lowering the percentage of votes he needs to receive to win another term. It also creates the new position of vice president which would make it possible for him to choose his eldest child, Karim Wade, as his running mate.............

Momodou,
This criminal whose head cannot control a single hair is so stupid and selfish. I sometimes wonder whether Africans are cursed. How can this things happen?
For God's sake Abdoulie Wade who has tried against Senghore for years and Abdou Joof but could not win any election. He only managed to come to power through the help of a fellow opposition Mustapha Nyasse who formed an alliance with him to defeate Abdou Joof.
After winning his helper Mustapha Nyasse was betrayed and sacked.
Abdou wade should know that at 86 years, he may live a hundred years but cannot rule until he is hundred. Why the changes that your citizens don't want.
I am sure if Abdou while in power wanted to do this Abdoulie criminal Wade was going to be the first to have oppose it now why would he want to create a position for his son to rule?
Why can't Karim Wade try on his own by seeking the people's mandate directly instead of through his father's clever criminality?

Culled from BBC website:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-13887613

"The protests continued even though President Abdoulaye Wade dropped one of his proposed changes.

He had wanted to reduce the proportion of votes needed to win a presidential election, and avoid a run-off, from more than 50% to 25%.

The bill also creates the elected position of a vice-president.

Government spokesmen Serigne Mbacke Ndiaye said Mr Wade had "listened to the Senegalese people" and abandoned the idea of reducing the threshold to win a presidential election outright to 25%, Reuters news agency reports.

Justice Minister Cheikh Tidiane Sy has reportedly informed MPs about the decision."

AS FROM ABOVE REPORT; "But there are increasing concerns over the concentration of power around Wade, and growing frustrations over worsening public services and higher prices for staples."

HOWEVER FROM SAME REPORT; "Ibrahima Sene, a senior member of the opposition Benno Siggil Senegal coalition, praised the protesters for their determination but said their work was only half complete."

RELATED OPPOSITION CONSENSUS CANDIDATE SENEGAL

CONGRATS TO OUR NEIGHBOURS AS THEY HAVE DONE IT UNDER "NATIONAL ALLIANCE"; IN "PARTNERSHIP" & "SOLIDARITY" FOR THEIR (ALL OPPOSITION) "NATIONAL CAUSE" AND NOT DRIVEN BY "PARTISAN CAUSE" OR "ILLUSION OF CONTROL & OWNERSHIP OF MORE PRIVILEGES FOR ONE MAIN PARTY THAN OTHER CITIZENS IN OTHER OPPOSITION PARTIES"
