http://www.gainako.com/news/news/2011/06/22/uk-based-gambian-lawyer-calls-for-the-immediate-release-of-oustass-ismaila-manjang.html
In today's Gambia, the question is no longer what has the arrestee done, but rather what paranoia gripped jammeh this time around. Since Jammeh is an idol-worshipper, I am the least surprised to see one that preaches against idol-worshipping being arrested.
After Jammeh invested in that mosque in Gunjur, he now have a special interest. The people of Gunjur should have rejected that money to avoid jammeh meddling with their business.
We are in full solidarity with Manjang and his family.
Yero.

This sounds like complete foolishness arresting Alhaji Ismahila Manjang for rubbish. It just seems that the officers were overzealous and heavy handed to arrest him. What is the actual purpose of the arrest. It seems on the evidence produced that the case will most likely be thrown out of court. The Police should be cautioned for wasting court time and bringing the Gambian Juridical System into disrepute. From the report this just seems to be a case of police harassment. The government is now looking at ways to tighten its belt one way it could do this is by seriously making efficiency savings is to cut back on rogue officers who harass innocent members of the public conducting their lawful business.

Thanks sister O, more training might be useful as well.

True! However I do think there are far too much police in Gambia with nothing better to do than harass people. As you said Toubab training might be helpful. However, I think a good overhauling of Gambian policing making it fit for purpose would be welcome.Money could be better saved by people training in civil engineers out of the savings leftover by natural wastage to fill the gaps needed to reach vision 2020.

Sister O... Hi :)
just wanted to say "here here" to your comment but can we extend that to ALL INNOCENT CITIZENS and not just restrict it to members of the public? quote: one way it could do this is by seriously making efficiency savings is to cut back on rogue officers who harass innocent members of the public conducting their lawful business.

Sister O, I feel that you are perhaps thinking of decimating the Gambian Police for the sake of bad apples, this would indeed be a retrograde step in my opinion, who could the average Gambian go to for help and assistance in the absence of an effective police force ? Hmmmmmmmmmm let me see.........Ah yes The Army........not a good idea. I am aware that the salary of a front line police officer is not great,SOMETIMES salaries are delayed for reasons that I do not know, maybe the excuse could be the same as that for the recent football payments,if I remember correctly "the man who signs the cheques was not there for three days " If the modest Salaries are not paid to family men on time who will feed their families ? what are they expected to do to put food into the mouths of their wives and children ? you know the answers there is no need for me to elaborate. Therefore the answers to the problem lies with others to some extent and not solely with the Police.Much more thought has to be given if this matter is going to be resolved. |

Toubab I am wondering who instituted this culture of security officers harrassing innocent people? You know when their boss stands on platforms threatening innocent members of the public, i wonder if the NIA, NDEA, PIU, GReen Boys, etc all see that as a green light to eliminated decent and critics. If the President himself threaten to bury Gambians six feet deep, I wonder why wouldn't the culture of thugry take roots in the Gambia. The problem is always from 'orders from above'. Unless, the man above become civilise, realise that, even God do not force people to like him, the security forces will continue their brutality and thugry. |

"The problem is always from 'orders from above'." I am sorry this is a culture that has developed NO ONE WILL TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY ,far better to say I was only following orders and BLAME someone else. History has shown that this excuse is rubbish and NOT ACCEPTABLE ,EVERYONE is PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE for what they do or don't do. I was impressed with a recent TV interview where a Syrian soldier fled his country because he would not carry out orders to kill his own people,he showed his ARMY id,this was a case of a small cog in a big machine who said, this is not right to do this.
This is a case in point recently; http://www.gambia.dk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10990 |

Toubab what about the Gambian Police women aren't you forgetting that they also put food on their families table. What is expected from Police Officers is that they don't abuse their authority. The same principle should also apply to Soldiers and the Security Agents etc. Santafara you speak as if the culture of harassment is only a Gambian phenomena unfortunately it exists the world over. All states will use their authority if they feel they are being threatened or under attack of terrorism.
Yes and the terrorists are those who threaten to violently take over the democratically elected heads of state. It is the challenge of the teens with examples set by the Arab Spring overthrowing repressive regimes by sheer population mobilization. The revolutions that occurred in North Africa and the Middle East have made world leaders pay attention at the vast power of peaceful protests. Although there have been shifts in power external supporters are still ensuring that they can still have a monopoly on their interests i.e. Oil in Libya
As for Gambia strategically it's relevance is of little importance in the Global Scheme of things with the opposition being splintered with no clear vision on how to carry the country forward. The opposition blueprint for where it is now was casted in 2001, when Darboe decided to boycott National Assembly and instead use the media as the legislature this was the fatal mistake. I said it then as I say it now. Without a robust opposition in the National Assembly the majority of Bills will obviously go through.
The Gambian Opposition committed political suicide and turned their backs on their supporters by not stepping up to the plate as their Representatives in the National Assembly. Time has marched on and 10 years later Gambians have witnessed a lot of changes during that time. The Media Commission Bill 2001 is one area that still holds a lot of contention going to the heart of freedom of speech.
Ironically, it is Freedom of Speech causing many governments around the world dilemmas especially with the internet as a galvanizing force. This discourse is ongoing and no doubt will be debated in many foras and intelligence Agencies of many nations are clamping down on forums , which are thought of in-sighting civil unrest within their territories. Gambia was one of the first states to do so but now many countries are following suite.
Nevertheless, Human Rights need to be respected and leaders are there to serve the people. It is ultimately for the people to decide who will be their leader and as the elections beckons this year Gambians at home will make that decision at the ballot box.
Peace

Sister O, OK I made a mistake, I forgot the ladies, sorry, but you forgot to deal with the salary content of my posting ( I cannot believe you overlooked that on purpose ) which in some part explains the situation that officers find themselves in,although I do not condone overzeliousness, I can understand their frustration, also whilst I am here, you failed to have your say on Personal responsibility and the blame others culture that is endemic in all levels of Gambian society, again I cannot believe that did not grab your attention but hey, you are not obliged to answer anything if you don't want to,but civilised arguement does tend to keep the mind active |
