THE POINT Henry Gomez says he was ‘misunderstood’

"Speaking in an interview with this reporter at the weekend, the GPDP leader stated that his colleagues misunderstood his comments, as he was not in any way criticizing anyone of them. “What I was saying was that if we are talking about an alliance or a coalition, we have to go in for a new party and, of course, new leaders,” he added.

“My colleagues misunderstood my point. I was not saying that people should choose leaders for the NRP, UDP or PDOIS - because I’m not even interested in that. What I was saying was that if we are to form an alliance, we should choose new leaders,” Gomez said, while apologizing to anyone he might have offended.

However, Henry Gomez maintained that if the opposition camp in the country is to form any alliance ahead of the polls, veteran leaders must give chance to young and emerging leaders, who he added, are the ones who can effect change.

Commenting on the recently concluded general voter registration exercise, Gomez described it as a success, adding that the Independence Electoral Commission has achieved its target by registering over 800,000 ahead of the polls."

"Gomez apologised for his earlier statement on opposition coalition which brought about controversy in the opposition camp.

He said, what he meant was for all the opposition parties interested in a coalition to come together and give opportunity to Gambians to select the leader of any coalition"

FREEDOM ON-LINE NEWS Gambia: Breaking News: “SOME OPPOSITION PARTIES ARE ON JAMMEH’S PAYROLL.” Nyassi UDP

MAIN EXTRACTS: "Giving an overall assessment of the just concluded voter registration, Mr. Nyassi said the exercise was characterized by fraud here and there even though he welcomed the transparent nature of the registration process. He lamented about the IEC’s move to open a registration center at the State House in Banjul, where President Jammeh, and his wife were registered.

Mr. Nyassi opines that this alone discredits the entire voter registration.
He argues that there is no provision in the Electoral Laws that said the State House should be classified as a registration center. This is the first time in living memory that a Head of State, and his family had been registered at the State House, Mr. Nyassi tells Freedom Radio in an interview on Monday.

Mr. Nyassi’s party will examine the main electoral register before filing an action before the IEC’S constituted revising courts with the hope of contesting the legality of some of the non Gambians registered by the Commission, he said. He is convinced that the UDP will vigorously put up a case to prove to Gambians and the world at large that Yahya Jammeh’s Government is engaged in fraudulent registration of voters.

Admitting that it was costly on the side of the UDP to fund the monitoring of the registration process across the length and breadth of the country, Mr. Nyassi said his party is still working on paying some of the agents who helped to monitor the exercise. He said his party relies on financial aid extended to them by supporters outside the country, and as such it’s extremely hard to provide monetary compensation to folks who volunteered to serve the party during such a nationwide voter registration exercise. Mr. Nyassi was not in the position to disclose how much money per day UDP registration agents were paid. He said the party’s leadership is handling issues relating to monies owed to the agents.

Mr. Nyassi also commented about APRC propaganda that Lawyer Darboe is about to retire from politics. He said he is aware of such rumors, and false propaganda spearheaded by the ruling party. He said Lawyer Darboe will be sworn in as the third President of The Gambia come November— adding that Gambians are in a dire need of regime change. He said the APRC is bent on spreading gossip, and character assassination against Mr. Darboe—a man Nyassi describes as widely loved, and appreciated by Gambian voters. He said such misinformation will not save Jammeh from being dislodge from power come November. Mr. Nyassi said the writings are on the world for regime change in The Gambia.

Regarding the APRC’s claims of landslide victory for Jammeh, Nyassi said the proof of the pudding is in the eating. He said come November Gambians will replace Jammeh. He said let the APRC kept dreaming, but the reality is that Gambians are fed up with Yahya Jammeh’s despotic rule."

THE POINT NEWS Henry Gomez denounces politics of castigation

"Monday, August 22, 2011

Secretary General and party leader of the opposition Gambia Party Democracy and Progress (GPDP), Henry Gomez, has called on his fellow opposition members and Gambians in general to always avoid the politics of personal attack and castigation, ahead of forthcoming presidential election slated for 24th November 2011.

Gomez, who was speaking to our reporter at the weekend, said such behavior has“no room in 21st century politics”.

“People have graduated from these types of politics. This is the time of reconciliation, and for us to build a better and prosperous Gambia through change, which I believe we can,” Gomez stated.

While calling on what he called non-politicians to leave politics to the politicians, the GPDP leader noted that politics comes and goes.

According to him, many Gambians think that his party is small, but come 24th November, the election results will speak for itself.

“We have done our homework and we are strong on the ground,” he added.

He stated that the credibility of the forthcoming presidential election depends entirely on the Independent Electoral Commission, calling on the Commission to conduct the polls in a free, fair and transparent manner.

“Gambians trust the IEC; so the Commission must not betray that trust bestowed on them,” he said.

Also noting that the IEC needs help from all stakeholders in the electoral process, including the politicians by ensuring peace and tranquility, Gomez stated that his party would contest the November polls.

Commenting on the much talked about possibilities of forming an opposition alliance, the GPDP leader opined that all opposition parties are hoping for one goal, which he said is “change”.

However, he expressed the need for opposition leaders to go for primaries to enable Gambians choose their favorite candidate to contest against the ruling APRC.

He said with this, a term limit of five years will be implemented so that no person can stay at the helm of affairs for more than two terms.

Gomez also used the interview to refute recent allegations made against him by Shyngle Nyassi of the United Democratic Party, that he is on President Jammeh’s payroll, stating that being in the opposition does not mean that one would not commend government for doing good.

“Politics is not about harassment; politics is not about intimidation; politics is not about insulting; politics is not about fighting, and being an opposition does not mean that you have to criticize even the good deeds of government. There are things that you can clap for, and say ‘a job well done’ ” Gomez stated.

“I have nothing against President Jammeh. The only thing I have against him is his leadership,” he stated.

He said, among others, that his party’s programmes for 2011 will be to call for real democracy and change.

“All what we need is change, because we all know where the ruling APRC is heading to,” he said, adding that anyone who is prepared to vote for the APRC is voting for kingship, and not for a president.
