Wednesday, June 01, 2011
At least 30 youth leaders from different organisations and associations who completed a four-day capacity building training on peace building, crime prevention and violence recently visited Tanka Tanka Psychiatric and Kairaba Police Station.

The team was led by Abdul Jobe, the director of Youth Crime Watch (YCW) and Ebrima Ceesay, the chairman of board of directors at YCW. The visits availed them the opportunity to get firsthand information about the psychiatric home and the importance of community policing.

In a chat with the visiting youth leaders, Ann Marie Mendy, the officer-in-charge of Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Centre underscored the importance of the visit, saying that life is improving at the Centre. She disclosed that 50% of their patients are involved in drugs and are mainly youths. She mentioned inadequate security and staff as their major constraints.
At the Kairaba Police Station, Chief Inspector Dodou Jammeh, officer in charge commended the youths for their visit. He harped on the importance of community policing, stressing that the police cannot work without the community and vice versa. He then told the youths to always give them information whenever they suspect any criminal. Jammeh also disclosed that 30 to 4o% of their detainees are youths.
