AFRICAN COMMISSION PRESIDENT CRAVES FOR HUMAN RIGHTS COURT By Fabakary B. Ceesay
The president of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights, Her Excellency, Ambassador Salamatou Sawadogo, has called on member states of the African Union to promptly ratify the protocol on the creation of an African and People's Rights Court. The African Commission's president made this remarks on Thursday during the closing ceremony of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights. She pointed out that the creation of this court will address the grave human rights violations that are perpetuated in certain regions of the continent. According to her, these human rights violations inhibit the hope for lasting peace and development in Africa. "Together we can work to ensure that humans' and peoples' rights are respected, that cases of violations of these rights are adequately addressed," she remarked. She said the African Commission is prepared to continue with its mission in collaboration with other institutions to complete its protective mandate. Going further, Mrs. Sawadogo posited that the African Commission is more determined than ever before to fulfil the mandate conferred on it by the African Charter. A final communique released by the African Commission revealed that the commission is resolved to organise seminars on the following topics in 2006: - Terrorism and Human Rights in Africa
- Islam and Human Rights
- Contemporary forms of Slavery
- Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons in Africa.

Oh God Momodou, What a great man you are? This is so far the best way foward for Africa. If we can have a like of the European Convention on Human Rights where citizens could bring their states to account and force them to respect their Human Rights,I shall live happy throughout my entire life. God bless you and may this information come true.I would be really willing to serve in such a commission to help promote Human Rights across the continent. Mankajang Janyanfara |

It is in the same breath that as we welcome such a proposal,we hope it doesnt remain so.I think Africa has had enough of these violations & at present as we speak are going on.Surely in the 21st century there should not be room for so called political crimes. At present southern Africa is embroiled in the detremental issue of Robert Mugabe & his ruling Zanu. While it is at the doorsteps of the thriving & young democracy of South Africa,it still remains a mystery why the problem cant be solved once & for all 6 years down the line.I have never seen such economic deteroriation in my life in a country outside of war, which such enormous potential & resources.I think the best thing that Africa can do for herself & the people of Zimbabwe is to bring Mugabe to account for his time in office, otherwise to me the African commission's statement remains a wish. |
