Dailynews Editorial: Torture is Becoming Rampant in The Gambia!
Monday, May 16, 2011

Gambians and non-Gambians alike who follow developments in Gambia will realise that allegations of torture are becoming common in the country.
Currently, there is a global call for the banning of torture, especially when used by the powers that be to obtain information from suspects.
Whether physical or psychological, torture is a violation of human rights. And it is not legally justifiable to subject a suspect to torture.
The courts of law are there to make redresses where and when needed. People in authority should have regard for the rule of law. People who are under police custody should be presumed innocent until found guilty by a court of law.
The growing rate at which reports of torture, especially those resulting in death allegedly by security agents is a concern.
This year alone, eight security officers were arrested, detained and are facing trial in connection with allegations of torture resulting to death.
In January 28, 2011, Dembo Sibi, a native of Numuyel village in Upper River Region died following a severe torture allegedly unleashed on him by four members of Police Intervention Unit (PIU). The officers were arrested and the case is underway at the Basse Magistrates’ Court.

Another case in point worth mentioning was the killing of Cherno Alieu Suwareh allegedly by four anti-narcotic Agency (NDEA) officers. He was allegedly tortured to death.
Many suspects under trial for alleged crimes have complained of the use of torture when their cautionary statements were being obtained from them by security agents.

Going into details of most of these cases is forbidden as they are unsettled cases. However, it is important to advise the government of The Gambia to put a stop to torture.

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.

Those who torture expect immunity from punishment especially when they are backed by the president. It has been relayed that the big man enjoys torture sessions or watching recorded sessions to laugh about. How true, anyone's guess.
