The powers that be have decreed that any one traveling to the Gambia and who buys a local sim card for their phone has to provide all thier personnel details even though this information was provided on the arrivals card at the airport.
They say that other countries have done this but all the countries I have been to this is not the case and never heard of such a thing befor and so would think this is in the minority.
The reasoning is it will help investgate crimes. That may be the case but I think a sledge hammer to crack a nut. Also I think a case of big brother and over kill as they already have the information.
They say the information held will be secure but as we know from high profile cases in the UK recently even your phone can be hacked by any one even the authorities. What do you think ? Maybe a pole ?

Snuggles, we can buy as many prepaid sim cards as we want here without registration. In fact these are the cards people use when they call to Gambia and other countries. However, this is not the case in other countries such as the USA I was told. |

You do not need to register to buy US prepaid SIM cards. Walmart, Metro PCS and loads of smaller companies sell SIM cards over the counter. Personal details are collected only when you sign contracts (to check credit worthiness).
I encountered these freaky laws of collecting personal details for prepaid SIM cards and using internet cafes in some Middle Eastern countries. Even these countries are changing as most coffee shops in Amman, Cairo, and Beirut have free wireless that do not require registration.
Most noteworthy phone criminals use VOIP(Skype, GIZMO5, etc) connected by proxy IP address. I highly doubt that Gambia has the required technology to track these folks.

Prince, thanks for that information. The person I spoke to in the US perhaps did not understand the different conditions for contracted and pre-paid sim cards. I have also seen that you can buy pre-paid sim cards in all other European countries i visited without giving any details.
