A snippet from the link provided by The Indexing Master (kobo ) Excellent for Senegal, BUT a problem for Gambia, especially as it APPEARS that Senegal is paying farmers CASH for their peanut crop.
"Senegal produced a record 1.286 million tons of peanuts last year, Wade said. Peanuts account for 60 percent of the country’s agricultural exports, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The state sets farm gate prices at 165 West African CFA (35 cents) a kilogram (2.2 pounds) during the December to May harvest. The Agriculture Ministry plans to extend the set price outside the harvest to support farmers, he said. Peanut oil exports by Senegal’s Suneor, the country’s biggest peanut-oil processing company, account for as much as half of world supply, according to a 2007 report by the USDA. " |

Kobo, as you have doubtless noticed bantaba in cyberspace is very quite these days, never mind,I ask you to remember that I am only a commentator and am prompted to write about most things on the information that is published in the newspapers,it is true to say that news publication in Gambia is somewhat different to the news that MOST other countries are able to publish. I read the article that you provided a link to,this paragraph sums up the content: "The keys to the vehicle and a cash amount of D60, 000 meant for the documentation of the said vehicle were handed over to the beneficiary, by the vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy who presided over the occasion on behalf of the president, at State House grounds in Banjul. This latest gesture did not only show President Jammeh’s appreciation of the agricultural programmes produced by Fatty, but also his continuous commitment and empowerment of agricultural initiatives in the country that are inline with the overall national food security agenda."
Personally I do not see anything wrong in giving a gift to someone who is committed and working towards increasing food production in Gambia, its like giving bonus to a trader on the stockmarket in western countries as a reward for making his company more money, that's the way things work in the world, you get nothing for nothing, Gambia is slightly different because the head of the company ( The Gambia) is H.E.!
