Story: Ranking of a Person Who Repents

Source: "Stories of Repentance”; Compiled by: Muhammad Abduh Mughawiri

Bakr ibn Abdullah al-Muzani is the narrator of this story:

There was once a butcher who fell in love with the daughter of his neighbors. One day, the girl's parents sent her on an errand to the neighboring town. Seeing that she was alone, the butcher followed her until she reached a secluded place, where he made his presence known to her. When he tried to seduce her, the girl said, "Do not do so! Indeed, I love you even more than you love me, but I fear Allah."

The butcher's jaws dropped and he said in self-reproach, You fear Allah and I don't! He left her alone and repented for hisintentions.

On his way back, he became extremely thirsty. He soon came across a Prophet from the Prophets of the Children of Israel. Noticing the expression on the butcher's face, the Prophet asked, "What is the matter with you?"

"Extreme thirst," said the butcher.

"Let us go supplicate to Allah for rain."

"I have no good deed that makes my supplication worthy of being answered," said the butcher.

"Then let me invoke Allah while you say 'Ameen' to my invocations," said the Prophet.

He then began to supplicate, and the butcher said, 'Ameen,' after each of the supplications.

Suddenly, a cloud appeared, rain fell from it into the nearby town, after which it approached the two men. Wherever the butcher walked, the cloud followed after him, instead of hovering over the Prophet.

"You claim that you have no good deeds," said the Prophet. "Yet despite the fact that it was I who supplicated while you said 'ameen' the cloud shaded the city and then it followed you. What is your story?"

The butcher the told him what happened with his neighbor's daughter.

"One who repents to Allah has a ranking that no other person can achieve," said the Prophet.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger having said: "By Him in Whose Hand is my life, if you were not to commit sin, Allah would sweep you out of existence and He would replace (you by) those people who would commit sin and seek forgiveness from Allah, and He would have pardoned them." [Sahih Muslim]

This Hadith above is a clear manifestation how please our Creator is with those who sin and repent for their shortcomings.

“See they not that they are put in trial once or twice every year (with different kinds of calamities, disease, famine)? Yet, they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson (from it).” [Qur'an, al-Tawbah (9:126)]

Abu Hurayra said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'By Allah, I ask Allah's forgiveness and turn towards Him in repentance more than seventy times a day."

Abu Hamza Anas ibn Malik al-Ansari, the servant of the Messenger of Allah reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Allah is happier about the repentance of one His slaves than one of you would be about finding your camel which had strayed away from you in the middle of the desert."

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Allah will turn towards anyone who turns in repentance before the time that the sun rises from the place it set." [Muslim]

Abu 'Abdu'r-Rahman 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Allah the Mighty and Majestic accepts the repentance of His servant as long as his death-rattle has not begun." [At-Tirmidhi]

O Allah, for You is all Praise - You are the Light of the Heavens and the Earth and all that is in them; and for You is all Praise – You are the Guardian of the Heavens and the Earth and all that is in them; and for You is all Praise.

O Allah You are the Truth, Your Promise is True, Your Speech is True, Your Meeting is True, Paradise is True, the Hellfire is True, the Hour is True, the Prophets are True and Muhammad is True.

O Allah, to You have we submitted our souls, in You have we believed, upon You have we relied, for You have we argued, to You have we taken our judgement, so forgive us all that we have done and what we have not done, what we have hidden and what we have disclosed. You are the Promoter, and You are the Delayer, there is no God but You.

O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the followers of Muhammad, just as you sent prayers upon Ibrahim and upon the followers of Ibrahim. Verily, you are full of praise and Majesty. And O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the followers Muhammad, just as you sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the followers of Ibrahim. Verily, you are full of praise and Majesty.

FROM THE MIMBAR OF HOLY HARAM IN MAKKA
(Friday, September 21, 2001)

Repentance brings Divine blessings

Sheikh Omar Bin Mohammad Al-Sebail Imam and Khateeb of the Holy Mosque in Makkah, enjoined the worshipers to be mindful of Allah in their words and deeds and come closer to Him through repentance and righteous deeds.

In his Friday Sermon at the Holy Mosque in Makkah on September 21, 2001, he said that Allah commanded the Prophet (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) to worship Him alone and not ascribe any associate with Him and ask forgiveness from Him day and night.

The Imam added that repentance is the practice of the people of firm faith and pure belief who always take refuge in Allah because their hearts are full of submission to Him.

He said that it is because of repentance that the mercy of Allah descends on His slaves in this world and the Hereafter, and misery is kept off from them.

Sheikh Al-Sebail went on to say that repentance also opens way for Divine blessings, rainfall, abundant sustenance, fruits and progeny as Allah has promised those who repent will enjoy a good life and bounty.

Narrated by Kab bin Malik (Radhiallaho anho):
I said, "O Allah's Apostle! For the acceptance of my repentance
I wish to give all my property in charity for Allah's sake
through His Apostle." He (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said,
"It is better for you to keep some of the property for
yourself." I said, "Then I will keep my share in Khaibar."

Bukhari Vol. 4 : No. 20

------------------
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (Radhiallaho anha):
Whenever Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu'alaihi wasallam)
returned from a Ghazwa, Hajj or 'Umra, he used to say Takbir
thrice at every elevation of the ground and then would say,
"None has the right to be worshipped but Allah; He is One and
has no partner. All the kingdoms is for Him, and all the praises
are for Him, and He is Omnipotent. We are returning with
repentance, worshipping, prostrating, and praising our Lord. He
has kept up His promise and made His slave victorious, and He
Alone defeated all the clans of (non-believers)."

Take the Time Right Now to Repent to Allah! Repentance: means turning back from disobeying Allaah to obeying Him. Repentance is beloved to Allaah, as He says: "Verily, Allaah loves those who repent and those who purify themselves.[Surah Al-Baqarah: 222] Repentance is an obligation on every believer. Allaah says: "O you who believe! Turn to Allaah in sincere repentance!" [Surah At-Tahreem: 8]

These were the words of Adam (A.S) when he repented to Allah after eating from the forbidden tree.

Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfirlana watar hamna lana koonanna minal khasireen

Our Lord ! we have sinned against ourselves and unless You grant us forgiveness and bestow Your mercy upon us ,we shall most certainly be lost

SURAH AL-A`RAF ,VERSE 23

Prophet ADAM (A.S) supplicated to Allah when Satan made them eat the fruit from the forbidden tree.

EXPLANATION:

Shaytan's Deceit with Adam and Hawwa' and Their eating from the Forbidden Tree:

Allah states that He allowed Adam and his wife to dwell in Paradise and to eat from all of its fruits, except one tree.

Thus, Shaytan envied them and plotted deceitfully, whispering and suggesting treachery. He wished to rid them of the various favors and nice clothes that they were enjoying.

(He (Shaytan) said) uttering lies and falsehood,

("Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels...'') meaning, so that you do not become angels or dwell here for eternity. Surely, if you eat from this tree, you will attain both, he said.
In another Ayah,

(Shaytan whispered to him, saying: "O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away'') [20:120]. Here, the wording is similar, so it means, `so that you do not become angels' as in;

(Thus) does Allah make clear to you (His Law) lest you go astray. ) [4:176] meaning, so that you do not go astray, and,

(And He has affixed into the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you;) [16:15] that is, so that the earth does not shake with you.

(And he Qasamahuma), swore to them both by Allah, saying,

("Verily, I am one of the sincere well-wishers for you both.'') for I was here before you and thus have better knowledge of this place. It is a fact that the believer in Allah might sometimes become the victim of deceit. Qatadah commented on this Ayah, "Shaytan swore by Allah, saying, `I was created before you, and I have better knowledge than you. Therefore, follow me and I will direct you.'''

(22. So he misled them with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them and they began to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called out to them (saying): "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Shaytan is an open enemy unto you'')

(23. They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers.'')

Ubayy bin Ka`b said, "Adam was a tall man, about the height of a palm tree, and he had thick hair on his head. When he committed the error that he committed, his private part appeared to him while before, he did not see it. So he started running in fright through Paradise, but a tree in Paradise took him by the head.

He said to it, `Release me,' but it said, `No, I will not release you.' So his Lord called him, `O Adam! Do you run away from Me' He said, `O Lord! I felt ashamed before You.'''

Ibn Jarir and Ibn Marduwyah collected this statement using several chains of narration from Al-Hasan from Ubayy bin Ka`b who narrated it from the Prophet . However, relating the Hadith to Ubayy is more correct. Ibn `Abbas commented on the Ayah,

(And they began to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise.) "Using fig leaves.'' This statement has an authentic chain of narration leading to Ibn `Abbas. Mujahid said that they began to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise, "Making them as a dress (or garment).'' Commenting on Allah's statement,

(Stripping them of their raiment) [7:27]

Wahb bin Munabbih said, "The private parts of Adam and Hawwa' had a light covering them which prevented them from seeing the private parts of each other. When they ate from the tree, their private parts appeared to them.''

Ibn Jarir reported this statement with an authentic chain of narration. Abdur-Razzaq reported from Qatadah, "Adam said, `O Lord! What if I repented and sought forgiveness' Allah said, `Then, I will admit you into Paradise.' As for Shaytan, he did not ask for forgiveness, but for respite. Each one of them was given what he asked for.

Ad-Dahhak bin Muzahim commented,

("Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers.'') "These are the words that Adam received from his Lord.''

Malik Bin Dinar was one of the Tabi'in ("the Follower generation of Muslims who were born after the death of the Prophet Muhammad, but who were contemporaries of the Sahaba "Companions".

He relates his story:

" I used to be so disobedient to Allah, drinking wine, mistreat people, deal with Reba (Usury), hit people, I used to do every sin to the point I was avoided by people. One day I felt like getting married as I longed for a baby to hold and care for. So I married and I was given a little girl whom I named Fatima. I loved the little girl so much that I started to have back my Eeman (Faith) in Allah slowly. I started to move away from my bad deeds as days went by, Fatima was only two years of age when she pushed a glass of wine I was going to drink on purpose as if Allah commissioned her to do so. The older Fatimah gets the closer I get to Allah and the further away I stay from bad deeds. When Fatima turned three she died, so I changed completely into a monster, much worse than I was ever before. I did not have the patience that faithful people have to make me cope with the pain. Shaytaan was playing with me like a toy and was telling me what to do. One day Shaytan came to me (by whispering) and told me: "Tonight you will drink like you have never done before" so I started drinking and drinking till I started seeing things and I fell into deep dreams. I then entered into Roaya (a dream that is from Allah, bad dreams are from Shaytan). I started to see the day of resurrection, the sun became dark, the seas are made of fire and Earth was shaken by massive quakes. People started to gather from every direction walking in groups and I was amongst them.

Suddenly I started hearing voices calling a person by his name, ''O so and so, Come forward to appear in front of Allah Al Jabbar (The Compeller, the Almighty)'' and then I saw a person being dragged by two angels and his face turned black from fear. I heard my name being called "O Malik Ibn Dinar, Come forward to appear in front of Allah Al Jabbar (the Almighty). Suddenly All the people disappeared as if no one is being questioned but me. then I saw a huge strong snake coming towards me with its mouth open, so I started running away from it. It kept following me, then I saw an old man, very weak and sad, so I asked him to help me, save me from this snake. He replied: "Son, I am too weak to help you, but if you run this way you might be saved". I started running in the way he pointed, but I found the sea of fire infront of me, So I started thinking "Should I run away from a snake into the fire?" I decided to go back although the snake is still coming in my direction until I reached the old man again. I told him" I ask you by the name of Allah to help me out of this situation" the old man cried and said: "I am so weak as you can see, I can't help you, but if you run towards that mountain you might be saved".
So I went towards the mountain, the snake was close it almost snatched me. When I got to the mountain I saw many children, they started yelling: "Fatimah, get your dad, get your dad" I was happy to see my daughter Fatimah who died at three years of age coming to save me. She took me with her right hand and pushed the snake with her left hand. I was like a dead person; barely moving from fear. Fatimah then sat in my lap like she used to do in real life and she said to me : " Dad, " Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah" Quran/ Al-Hadith?

I then asked Fatimah about the snake, she said: "It's your bad deed, you looked after it and grew it this big and it's killing you. Didin't you know that deeds will be shaped in bodies in the day of Judgment? ". I then asked her about the old man, Fatimah said: " It's your good deed, you ignored it and made it so weak, it cried for you as it could not help you.. If it wasn't for you having me and me dying little, no one would have been here to help you"
I then woke up from my dream screaming " the time has come, O my Lord... the time has come, O my Lord " So I got up, washed myself and made Ablution, then headed to the Masjid to pray Fajr prayer. When I got to the Masjid i found the Imam is reciting the same Ayah (verse)!!!
" Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah" Quran/ Al-Hadith?

This is the story of Malik Ibn Dinar, Imam (scholar) in the days that followed the death of the Prophet Mohammad (SAAW). He used to cry all night and ask Allah " My Lord, you Alone who knows who is going to Jannah (Heaven) and who is going to Nar (Hell), which way am I going? O Allah, make me of the dwellers of jannah and don't make me of dwellers of the hell ''

It is narrated that he used to stand at the door of the Masjid everyday calling '' (Saying) O disobedient slave, return back to your Lord. O heedless slave, return back to your Lord. O Fugitive slave, return back to your Lord... Your Lord is calling you Day and Night saying to you [whoever draws near Me an arm's length, I will draw near him a fathom's length. And whoever comes to Me walking, I will go to him running.]

~O Allah grant us a sincere repentance before our Death~ Allahumma Ameen.
