By Bakary Y. Jammeh
25-02-11

Kuunaalon Theatre and Drama Group, a rising drama and choir group based in Serekunda was sighted performing in Dakar during the World Social Forum that took place in Dakar, Senegal, at the Cheikh Anta Diop University on 4th February to 13th February 2011.

The forum was attended by several participants from different parts of the World with the Theme, “Another World Is Possible”. The Kuunaalon choir and drama group led by Mr. Suwaibou Touray performed within the Forum grounds and sang progressive songs, such as ‘Africa, We Should Unite Now or Perish, We Must Unite Africa’. They also sang ‘Our Transformation Shall Succeed, Succeed’.
A song against Monarchism was sang in Mandinka the chorus goes like this: “ Ning nga nna bankoo tu moo killing bulu ning a yandatala, ning nga bataa meng soto jee to nfang le ye wo sii nfang ma’ meaning; if we leave our country for one person, if he/she destroys it whatever suffering we get, we cause it to ourselves’.
The most interesting delegation has shown their talent and experience as they could be seen performing on the premises of Cheikh Anta Diop University with their Sewruba cultural troupe who has attracted the attention of so many delegates from different nations who watched, danced and listened to the joyful, educative and inspiring songs. The Kuunaalon group specifically targeted delegates from Zimbabwe, Palestine, Afganistan, Egypt, Tunis, Ivory Coast, Somalia, Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti etc to give them solidarity in their struggles for social justice.
The group was so inspiring in their performance which encourages Mr. Adama Sumareh from Malika, to invite Kuunaalon and The Future Planners to perform in Malika, a suburb of Dakar some 22 km away from Cheikh Anta Diop University.
Kuunaalon dramatizes a play which depicts ‘Force and Child Marriage’ and the Future Planners joined the Malika youth to perform a play on a similar theme and sang and dance sewruba and enlightening songs with the women of Malika.
Mrs.Krubally, a house wife resident in Malika who attended the program told this reporter that the play depicts exactly what is happening in their community and much of Senegal. He advised young girls never to allow any person no matter how rich to spoil their education for marriage. She said they laughed but their laugh is ironical since they were crying in their hearts because this is a serious social problem for their community.
The Community of Malika also invited Kuunaalon to a workshop organised as part of the activities of the World Social Forum to discuss issues pertaining to the rearing of domestic animals such as sheep, goats and cows and issues that affect progress within the community.
“We invite these two groups because we have seen them perform at the Cheikh Anta Diob university grounds and they are similar to the organization we have in Malika and we want to affiliate with them” said Mr. Adama Sumareh, a social worker resident at Malika in Dakar.
Issues were discussed during the workshop on how to bring peace among the two countries.
Speaking at the occasion Marget Sallah, the Alkalo of Malika said what they want is for peace and unity to prevail among the two peoples of the Gambia and Senegal.
After the workshop, Mr. Sumareh informs this reporter that they are very impressed with the contributions of Kuunaalon participants and they intend to keep the contact with them. He also said they believe that this type of networking is the best instrument to bring peace within the two sister countries and the entire sub region.
On his part, Mr. Adama Sumareh a committee member of the programme said the objective of the programme is to sensitise our two peoples on human right’s issues in Africa and the world at large. Mr. Sumareh said they would like to continue working with the two groups from the Gambia for the benefit of the two countries and to raise the awareness of the people.

Is this Suwaibou my brother in Foroyaa? I would love to see him in action. I hope it is recorded.
