Watchman, I am on record as being one of the critics of Jawara's 30 year rule which left us with neither a strong economy nor a viable democracy backed by the institutions.

However, I have always admired sir Dawda's moral aptitude and his human decency. As they would say... sometimes being too cognizant of one's moral latitude make one some what of a weak leader surrounded by unsypathetic material minded folks.

Sir Dawda would go down in history as someone who has a great sense of morality who tried to live an ordinary life despite having access to a pool of wealth. This he stands out and will forever.

As a young Gambian born in the second decade of Jawara's reign I am thankful for being brought up in a peaceful country with sound moral values.

I had however, wish that this father of our nation had a little more aspiration for the country. By not only presiding over the peaceful nature of our nation, but also putting in a foundation where Gambian children would aim at the sky in exploring their potentials...

I wish that Sir Dawda had realized that building higher institutions of education was a basic necessity for a young democracy and a bedrock for a better and more prosperous life!

I wish that with the numerous travels and experience of high standard of living in other parts of the world, the father of our nation would have dreamed a little more for the children of this dot of a nation...

I had wish that with his intellectual fire power, sir DK would have imagined what would happen to Gambia and its people if he wasn't around, what kind of successors he would have wished inherited him?

I had wish that sir Dawda would have done everything humanely possible to surround himself with people who cared for what he cared for and not allow them to take advantage of his Leniency thus permanently blinding his regime from dreaming higher..

I had wish that the father of our nation, educated and trained as a medical scientist (veterinarian) would envisioned a Gambia with skillful young doctors and Vets that would work to preserve our agricultural industry that forever would feed our people and make them proud of our small nation...

I can go on and on, and unfortunately, he had stayed around for too long until he was completely engulfed by those who wanted him contained so they can do what they wanted...

Having said all these, I still have great admiration for the old man and had wished that Gambians had an opportunity to engage him at an intellectual level to map out a future for our country...

Unfortunately, anytime you think about his legacy another thought for what we currently have follows that... As you said the what if question will forever remain unanswered...

Thanks for a great piece and I only wish it was still a dream that we could exploid the opportunities for our nation!!!
