Turks what did you day to the allegations below?
Man Unable to Survive Torture by Police Tuesday, February 01, 2011
A chaotic scene erupted in Numuyel village on Friday afternoon as 30-year-old Dembo Sibi’s dead-body arrived from the hospital. He died following a severe torture unleashed on him by the personnel of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) camped in village. An angry village mob surged toward the PIU camp with weapons for revenge, but thanks to the intervention of the Governor, a bloodier scene was avoided, albeit the villagers burnt-down the thatched-made PIU camp, The Daily News gathered. Late Dembo’s ailing 60-year-old father, Sarjo Saibo Sibi, unsuccessfully fought back his tears as The Daily News approached him in his room on Sunday to discuss his son’s untimely death. “When information reached me that my son was arrested by the police, I sent his brother Sulayman to go and negotiate his release,” the sixty-year-old man broke into tears. “I gave Sulayman D500, but the officers said that amount was small. They demanded D3,000.” Sarjo said he was not having that sum, but still managed to give D1500 to Sulayman, but the officers insisted to be paid D3, 000. “When Sulayman returned with the sum, I told him let us leave everything in the hands of God,” the old man added. According to Sulayman Sibi, he found his brother tied-tight with a rope against a tree while the officers were beating him. “I told the officers to release him, but they refused unless I bring D3, 000. “My brother (Dembo) called me as I went there to give him lunch. He said he could not eat; that he would die. Then the officers started beating him and forcing him to eat,” an equally sad brother has said. The PIU officers arrested late Dembo at around 1:00 am on Friday for allegedly stealing a friend’s motor bike, villagers sources said. However, the owner of the motor bike said at the time of the arrest, he told the officers that he allowed late Dembo to use his motor bike but one of the officers ordered him to shut up his mouth. “That was how the officers took him away,” he explained. “When I went to the camp in the morning, I found Dembo was tied against a tree with wet clothes. I appeal them to release him, but they refused. Muhammed Camara, who is overseeing the district in the absence of his brother, the chief, said it was around 9 a.m on Friday, when Dembo’s father called him requesting him to negotiate with the officers, but he told the old-man that he was busy at the time. “I arrived at the camp by 4 pm. I found late Dembo flatly lying on the ground. I then called his brother who alongside the PIUs took him to the hospital.” The Daily News could not contact the hospital for confirmation. But village sources said the hospital confirmed that Dembo passed-away before arriving at the hospital. At the time of going to press, police spokesperson could not be reached on his phone for comment. But O.C Badjie of Basse Police Station said the case is being investigated. He said the corpse and the PIU officers involved have been taken to Banjul. Family sources confirmed that the corpse is kept at the mortuary in Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul. But it is unclear whether the PIU officers have been arrested or charged. Late Dembo was survive with one wife and four children. Author: Ousman Touray

This is very sad... the Gambian police are underpaid and make a living by squeezing resources out of the populace but one would not expect them to torture a person to death for a hundred bucks.
The death of a man who could not raise three thousand dalasi when his life depended on it would be very hard on his wife and four children.
Lets see if the government is willing to prosecute the perpetrators of this abominable crime.

When Gambia was described a Ploice State on this forum, out there some fanatics of the armed bandit regime challenged that.
You never know how many people passed through these inhumane teeatment by the hands of those paid to protect them.
When torture is reported, fanatics of the regime flatly deny in day light.
What then is this incident called? This man was no prisoner and was not given time to clear his good person.
Sad. |

What is even more surprising is the intervention of the area commissioner/Governor now that the family heeded his advise not to do any harm to those bandits, what would he do as administrator? Would they ever get prosecuted? What would have happened if they had even raised the amount they police require and for what? Gambia is now with no figure head.Every little rank is a god who can take lives as if we are no longer human beings but cercrificial animals. Lets wait what the dreaming King would do. Remember what led to the 10th/11th April where our sons/daughters were butchered just because they were demonstrating after police killed one of them through turture.
That was yesterday, Brikama police are at it again accused of killing an inmate by turturing him to his death which is unexpected by his family and love ones and the entire Gambians peace loving citizens.

While other countries are moving forward the Gambia is going back to the State of Nature. It seems lawlessness is the other of the day. Anybody could be a victim anytime. My cousin died in the hands of the Bundung Police in 2007 under similar circumstance. Some of you asked what will the authorities do? I am afraid nothing much.

This is a very sad incident and it underscores the biggest problem Gambia is facing. While we all might agree atleast the ones who choose not to be blinded, that Jammeh is presiding over a dangerous system, this problem remind us of how cruel of own people could be?
It is certain that the people who tortured this guy to death were not ordered to do so. They choose to do this brutal act of cowardice hoping to get away with it.
In fact the family may have been lucky that they were there when this guy died. He would have disappeared for good buried in the woods and never to be accounted for again.
How many people did this happen to in Gambia? who knows if Chief Manneh and many others who disappeared were tortured the same way and thrown away in the woods?
These kinds of acts is what really puts our people's decency into question. If they an open fire on our Students, arrest our mothers and sisters without remorse, torture our brothers to death in broad day light, what else can't they do?
This is the kind of barbaric act that we continue to oppose in Gambia. Does anybody who supports this regime comprehend this jungle behavior? Do you see why we question the system and despise it and the people who preside over it? This is just enough for anybody to ponder about this regime.... May he rest in peace!!! |

| Terangba, sorry for your loss... although this is very sad and unfortunate, it does not surprise me one bit. I was expecting brutalities like these from people hired and "trained" by the likes of Essa Badjie. |

It is not something that should surprise anyone includding Jammeh socalled supporters online. If they can condone such brutality and yet go on supporting turture, then I wonder if they are human.Much more how can a nation once known for its tolerance and humanity, once called the "Smilling Coast", NOW TURNED INTO A MURDER FIELD AND TURTURE CHAMBER? One day, One day all these atrocities would be brought to light and the perpetrators would be brought to account for their criminal acts and am sure we all knew the very socalled Jammeh fans would openly disown him once he is out for good! |
