After Thailand and Cambodia last year. I Thought I would try the Philippines this year My initial thoughts were Cubic Bay the ex American naval base thinking it would have in place all modern amenities and infrastructure indeed it has.
However on further investigation I learnt the crescent shaped bay which has little tidal surge has a main sewage pipe running from Manila and into the bay so when the wind is blowing in land not very pleasant.
So the next thought was Cebu island an hours flight from Manila. Cebu city being the oldest city in the Philippines with lots of history and things to see and do
. Not so the only things on the tourist map to see were Magellan cross, Basilica Del Sto Nino, Fort San Pedro, Casa Coroerdo Monument Heritage Of Cebu Monument, all of which you can see in a day and not very interesting.
The only thing was the Taoist Chinese Temple spectacular, built by the chinese on a hillside over looking the city. Realy spectacular
Cebu city is like any modern cosmopolitan city over crowded horrendous traffic and air pollution so my advise you only use it as a stop over for onward journey.
Travel deep south or north for beautiful beach resorts These are chill out places and for scuba diving and and surfing. Better still go island hopping for beautiful scenery and beaches. The islands being Camotes , Siquijor, Gulutungan, Cauhagan, Sulpa all beautiful.
But for me the most interesting was Bohol Island not only spectacular but also interesting with things to see and do Ancient Church's, caves, wild life park interesting bee farm, Blood compact monument where the Spanish made a flesh wound with the locals and exchanged blood as a bond of friendship. The Butter fly farm. The Hanging River Bridge walk, scary lol also lunch and cruise on the river to huge waterfalls wow,
The so called chocolate hills formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago which left many many quite large brown colour hills hence the name
But for me strange as it may seem was something not on the official tourist map was in a small village was a shell museum with 1000s and 1000s of sea shells of all colours shapes and sizes from 3 feet across giant clams to tiny quarter inch mollusks. Stunning
As I have said befor everything is really silly cheap at 67/67 pesos to the pound you can eat for as little as £5 per day. Pack of twenty cigarettes just over 50 pence a litre of beer under £1 from local shop An hour on the internet 10 pesose soft drink 7 pesos. An hours massage 110 pesos How can Gambia compete with that. But Gambia does have a certain charm as a place just to chill out So now back to the UK then of to gambia for possibly 6 weeks shotly
