Some good ideas for the road map. But it would require at least one election term for this. It will not be ready for 2011, maybe 2020 is more realistic.
Particularly 'must do' in to-do list is leader change. Also, let me give you example from Turkey, a party its faith very similar to UDP. There is a Republican's People Party (CHP), which was established when Turkish Republic Established,in 1923 by the genius leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. CHP has ruled as a single party until 1950s, when multi party elections were allowed. No one denies the what CHP has done i.e. re-established the country after devastating WW1 and stayed neutral during WW2, established secular state with a lots of social, political and cultural reports. When 1950s, Menderes, bright Liberal Conservative, rich land-ownder sweep the election as Turks were kind of wanted a change. His liberal conservative ideas worked like a charm. Turkey became NATO member, send troops to Korea, also her conservative ideology revert some of the 'radical secular moves by CHP. Economy started picking up. For example, CHP change the Ezan for Salah from the mosque to Turkish language. Menderes change that to Arabic again. This caused tremendous reaction from the CHP elite as they thought Turkey will change back to Ottoman days, under hilaphet. While they were leftist party, they also adopt the local idealogy called 'Kemalism' which is strict secular government. Since then, they have never became the full government. They did govern Turkey as part of coalition but they have never hold the power.
The reason is they are strict defender of secularism and this at the top of their agenda. They do have some valid concerns about radicalism I share but the voters always had other priorities as well. The current liberal+conservative coalition have economic development priority. Turkish public is not conservative but they support the current regime. I would support the current regime even though I am not religious conservative. This government make Turkey became the largest 15th economy in the world in 8 years. The GDP per capita tripled. The wealth increased. I am reading news. CHP is still put their secularism agenda as top priority.
UDP is similar. They don't have any solution, politics for economic development. They only thing they talk is 'human rights' 'democracy'. This is not the same agenda of many Gambians. Ordinary people are more worried about jobs, tapalapa, sugar. 'Human rights and democracy' is the agenda of only small elite, like some people here who do not have worry about daily economic problems like the ones in diaspora and watchman or other folks. UDP collective intelligence is too low to understand what the ordinary people want.
So i add the most important tactical change to revise the priorities of the party. And found some leader does not boycott election and does not run to another country when he is about the pizz his pants. |
diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.
Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

Turk, you hit the nail on the head. The UDP certainly talks a lot about lofty ideas but needs to find a working solution on how to appeal to Gambians and convince them they can deliver on bread and butter issues.
Once they master this learning curve, all the let downs they are going through in the present will be worth it. |
