From the description of mental hospital in Gambia the mentally ill might be better off in prison!!!
On a serious note, mental illness needs to be diagnosed and the patient needs help and support. This may prevent some of the reported murders.
Perhaps care of the mentally ill is a luxury of rich societies? After all in Victorian england they weren't well cared for either?
Do Gambians have access to anti depressants? These can help many people with mental health problems. |

I felt the same way Watchman as I followed the proceedings of this case. The mentally deranged certainly needs help. About six months ago, a woman who was going to the 'farosh' was hacked into pieces by a mad man. Most recently, a boy killed and burnt his mother in a house in Bundung. The latest is Hydara. What is coming from the old man is far from being called sanity. Certainly, help is needed to rescue them.

Youth parliamentarians visit Tanka Tanka Hospital Africa » Gambia Monday, January 24, 2011 West Coast Region's (WCR) youth parliamentarians recently visited Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital in the West Coast Region. They were accompanied by the speaker of the Lower River Region Youth Parliament, Honourable Awa Ceesay.
Speaking at the occasion, the speaker of the West Coast Region Youth Parliament, Hon. Aminata Hydara, said that their visit was mainly to show a sense of representation of the voices of the young people in the region and to give support to the patients in the psychaitric hospital. She noted that as youth activists it is paramount for them to know things affecting the youth, which mental illness is not an exception.According to her, they also learnt about the causes of mental illness, how to prevent themselves from such illness and also how to educate their peers on the causes of mental illness.
Hon. Hydara revealed that many mentally ill people are often discriminated against and isolated by their colleagues, parents and friends. To this effect, and as youths, she noted, they should learn to help their fellow youths when they are in problems because they are the leaders in the making. Youths, she went on, form the majority of the country's population, but that it is alarming that many are affected by mental illness.
For her part, Hon. Awa Ceesay, speaker of the Lower River Region Youth Parliament, commended the West Coast Region Youth Parliament for their good initiative and urged other youths to emulate them. "We will always help our fellow youths because we are the future leaders. We want to reach all of them," she remarked.
Bamba Janneh, head of the community health team, who is also a nurse at the hospital, welcomed the youth parliamentarians in Tanka Tanka Hospital. He explained that there is no health without mental health and that mental health should be everyone's priority. He stated that the community health team is making lot of sensitisation programmes in communities across the country to enligthen youths about the dangers of drug abuse and stress. Janneh commended the government and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for their support to the hospital.
Omar Bojang, a nurse at the hospital highlighted the signs of mental illness such as crying, isolation, lot of sleeping, talking to oneself and the loss of appetite. He said that the causes of mental disorders are complex and varies, depending on the particular disorder and individual. The West Coast Region Youth Parliament, a subsidiary of the National Youth Parliament (NYP) of The Gambia, is registered as a community based organisation.
The National Youth Parliament of The Gambia is a modern concept of youth participation with the ultimate goal of reducing the inter-generational gap that hinders and hampers the positive development of young people in The Gambia and all around the world. The NYP of The Gambia has since its establishment in 2002 made wonderful strides in such issues as democracy, human rights, good governance, youth participation, gender advocacy, training and empowerment of young people on HIV/AIDS, drugs and substance abuse, effective youth leadership, environmental protection, among others.
