"We should be banded by ideas and the best interest of the country. Elect the most qualified regardless of tribe. Progress comes when the best and the brightness are allowed to lead. "

Exactly.........No rational person can disagree with that statement terangba, but I fear that it is not politics in this day and age in any country.

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.

Is my experience/observation based on a coincidence that UDP is more dominated by Mandinkas? Or the displeasure of Mandinkas being the largest ethnic group in Gambia but the weakest ethnic group in the current government would make them more assertive in opposition and dominated in the UDP.

This is just a speculation.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

The battle of building a modern Gambia and move her forward into the 21 century should not be fought base on tribal lines, which existed in sixties. We ought to rise above tribal politics.

The task head is for Progressive, Decent Gambians who cannot be bought or intimidated is to band together and realize that what we have been doing has not worked. The highly educated and exposed progressives should be the new breed that leads the nation to a bright future.

How do we do this is?

1. One by first and foremost accepting our common failures.
2. Calling for a national dialogue where Gambians will choose a leader that is willing, capable and ready to fight for the people.
3. Gambians back home and most especially the Diaspora ought to get serious and support massive development projects and make the new leader the face of those development projects. Gambians politics 101 is all about what the next person can do for village X, Y and Z. If APRC buys a tractor of Village X, we ought to be able to convince that village we can do more and better without trampling on their rights.
4. Do not underrate APRC, APRC has done a lot in the 15 years, the new leader has to convince Gambians that we can have development and human rights and he or she can deliver both.
4. Whenever a single citizen’s rights are abused, the chosen leader will have to be willing a ready to highlight the plight of that particular citizen even if it means sleeping with the mosquitoes at mile two.

From now one instead of the usual infighting how about some one else take this list, paste it on a word document and add more ideas. Even if you do not agree with me, what ideas do you think will work against APRC? I am challenging every on at the Bantaba to list their ideas

Terangba, you are seriously on fire, full of controlled energy, and thats good. Just be a lil careful about building it up so much that you may eventually find it hard to control.

The beauty of Bantaba in cyberspace is reading people's takes on issues regarding our country's opposition parties and ofcourse the party in position. The debates are a lil heated or tough but they make a lot of sense. When we move on and look back, I hope we will realize that these debates represent a bonding process among people who want the same things for their counry but in different ways.

If there is anything one can learn from this thread, it is the fact that the UDP and its leader represent hopes of so many and that ia a responsibility so massive and so delicate. There's a host of folks out there that are very impatient with the party's results; they wanna see it walk the walk they believe will work; these criticisms should get the party fired up instead of getting it knocked cold.

Rambo's statement that if you cannot beat a system then you should join it is nothing but the talk of a coward. Visionary politics goes beyond mere victory. It is also about creatig a force that is to be reckoned with. It is about establishing a system that will instill the necessary amount of control in the form of checks and balance. Another defection story? Yes and this will not be the last one we hear. UDP final disintegration? No, far from it! Maybe just the thing needed for the party to see that which might have been an oversight somewhere.
