Gamcot Staff Not Paid For Three Years Express Concern Over State of Equipment
By Lamin Fatty on 19-01-11

Impeachable sources close to this reporter have confirmed that staffs working for the only cotton company in the Gambia, Gamcot in URR have not been paid salaries for more than three years. These, according to a concern staff is not only disappointing but in his view a shame to all patriotic citizens.
Speaking to this reporter, a senior staff who claims to have now turned to an un-successful beggar because of his lack of income for three years expressed his suffering and highlighted that since October 2007 they were told that the former Manager Mr. Amadou Danso have resigned and reported to be working for EC. He pointed out that one Mr. Woppa Baldeh is since then said to be the acting Manager. He however said that any time they approach the said Manager; his response would be, he does not know anything about Gamcot. This, according to him is like adding insult to a injury. He said it is high time for the Government and the president in particular to know that Gamcot staffs are still very alive without salaries for more than three years, and the company is already dead waiting for burial.
Also speaking to this reporter a mechanic who claims to be working for Gamcot for over thirty years said the equipments at Gamcot are almost dysfunctional. He said if the government cannot revitalise the company, it is better for them to auction all the equipments so as to earn government with some income. This reporter visited the dilapidated Gamcot Company to get the comment of the acting Manager but was told that he was out at the time of the visit. When contacted on his mobile the acting Manager Mr. Baldeh said he is in the course with those staffs who are complaining. He was however quick to add that they were not employed by the government but Gamcot company. He noted that the government of the Gambia owes no obligation to them. He pointed out that the government is however aware of the situation of the company since he said the Regional Authorities are aware of the situation at Gamcot. He urged the staff to maintain patience and continue praying, saying that one day things would be better, he concluded.

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
