Great I applaud this gesture, not of millions of Dalasi but a gift from normal people showing concern and helping in their own small way,

Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital receives donation africa » gambia Wednesday, January 12, 2011
The youth council of the Young Christian Men’s Association (YMCA) recently donated laundry materials to Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Centre at Brusubi.
The donated items included a bag of omo, bottles of rosovel and cottol, laundry soap and a packet of blue.
Speaking of the presentation ceremony at the health centre, Joseph Peacock of the YMCA said the donation came from the youth council of the YMCA.
Mr Peacock says every year the YMCA youth council gives donation to the health centre.
“Rehabilitation of young people is very important,” he said, adding that their organization had rendered a lot of support to young people in various sectors including the juvenile wing in Jeshwang.
He emphasised the need for cooperation between the youth council and the psychiatric centre.
In receiving the gifts, Momodou Ann, senior nurse at the health centre, said about the donation: “This is what we need.”
He added that a lot of youth have been affected by drug abuse. He therefore appealed to the public to help affected people with proper medication after their release from the centre.
Mr Ann also cautioned people to desist from the habit of giving false or misleading information about the health and mental condition of patients they take to the centre as “prolonged admission is not good for them”.
He added: “Mental sickness is like other diseases such as malaria, and high blood pressure; let us not discriminate against them even though their health is very challenging.”
Mr Ann further applauded partners who have been supporting them and used the occasion to call on the general public to always give a helping hand to patients at the psychiatric centre. Author: Yusuf Ceesay

Snippet No1: "For the past three years, Tanka- Tanka (Mental Home in The Gambia), has an average admission rate of 1,048 patients every year, majority of whom are young people whose problems are caused by drug abuse."
Snippet No.2 : “This means that at least 118,000 people in The Gambia are likely to be affected by mental disorders which require varying degrees of treatment and care,” he said.

I find that is is very odd that this news is published within days of the findings of Dr. Makie Taal,Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and it should be considered very quickly by the Gambian administration who may be able to gain great benefits for Gambia in the future. Snippet:
"Young people who smoke cannabis for years run the risk of a significant and irreversible reduction in their IQ, research suggests."

Well done Access Bank Staff. MAYBE "THE BANK" as well as the staff should put their hands in their pockets !
"Speaking to this reporter, Austin Jones, Head of Corporate Affairs of Access Bank, said they usually contribute to support people and that this year their choice was Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital. He added that at Access Bank, part of their requirement is to promote and contribute to corporate social responsibility."
Reading this,it appears that the BANK want to take all the credit and that the "selected staff" are the vehicle for that,Access Bank get your act together and give some of the goods you deal in,yes,MONEY.

Maybe there is money in this plan to enhance the care and treatment of the mentally ill or mentally handicapped in the Gambia,? Reading the words it looks like a talking shop by well intentioned people with no money to give away for improvements.
"What do I hope will happen? I really hope that there will be greater awareness, and that mental health will be integrated more into healthcare systems", he said. "I hope and pray that the economic and social aspects that contribute to mental disorders will be better addressed."
