Child sexual abuse a cause for concern Friday, December 31, 2010
The recent arrest of a Norwegian national in Brufut by the police for his alleged involvement in homosexual activities is, indeed, a good move.
Child abuse of any kind is a cause for concern to everyone, and strangers should not take advantage of the hospitality accorded to them by Gambians to abuse our children sexually.
In as much as The Gambia wants to welcome tourists in the country, we want to see responsible tourists who would enjoy their stay in the country, and visit our nice beaches, instead of abusing our children in any form.
Some of them will come to the country as tourists, and engage themselves in acts of paedophilia, which is against the laws of the county.
The protection and welfare of our children should be everyone’s responsibility.
It is equally the responsibility of parents to protect their children, and to beware of people who want to befriend their children, and be using money and gifts to entice them, with in some instances even pretending to be their pen friends.
Sometimes, even when parents are aware of such acts happening, they are reluctant to report the matter to the police, and this is not helping the situation.
It is high time we put a stop to this culture of silence, as it is not helping us at all.
People should be vigilant enough to report such matters.
The Child Protection Alliance has done a lot of sensitization in this area, and has conducted many training sessions for the security and other stakeholders to enable them to handle such cases.
We would like to commend the security for being vigilant enough to handle such cases.

Parents need to be educated to be aware of these risks. Perhaps the womens groups in villages could be used as a vehicle for this?

Momodou. Are you quoting directly from The Point or is this your own version of the article? Either way I want to point out to anyone who reads this, that paedophiles who abuse boys are not necessarily homosexual and it would not be right or fair to label such paedophile abuse in this way. There are paedophiles who abuse girls, paedophiles who abuse boys and those who abuse both. Paedophiles can be married with their own children, who are not necessarily abused by them. Paedophiles can be female as we have witnessed this year in the UK.(If we take the strictly legal definition) Although there is a question of whether women are manipulated by men into abusing children. This is open to interpretation of course and needs further research. What is clear is that paedophiles are very disturbed people with a warped sense of love and a power complex. They are dangerous people who will try to convince you that they love children and that the children love them. But in an adult way which children clearly do not. I am glad that this paedophile has been caught. What to do with them. They are clever and manipulative and will lie in order to reinforce their own feelings that they are doing no harm. Rape of babies is no joke. They have to be locked up for a long time. Even the best, most notable professionals working in this area in the UK are not convinced that paedophiles can be re- integrated in any way successfully back into society. I just don,t want homosexuality to be automatically seen as paedophilia.(Or the reverse) |

I am quoting the Norwegian papers. Someone brought my attention to this case and I later saw the Point article above. I know quite well that a paedophiles who abuse boys is not necessarily homosexual. |

One Svien Age Sandaker, a 45-year-old Norwegian national, was on Friday arraigned before Senior Magistrate Abdoulie Mbackeh of the Bundung Magistrates' Court, charged with three counts.

On count three, the accused was charged with sexual exploitation of a child contrary to Section 9(1)(a)(b) of Tourism Offence Act 2003.
The particulars of offence stated that the accused, in the years 2009 and 2010 in Brufut Village, West Coast Region, being a tourist, sexually exploited six young boys (names withheld), all under the age of 18, by touching their bodies, and thereby committed an offence. When the charges were read to the accused, he told the court that he does not understand English very well. "I can speak Norwegian and Swedish," he said.
Magistrate Mbackeh asked the prosecutor, Inspector Kuyateh, if there is anyone among the court interpreters who can speak Norwegian. The prosecutor replied in the negative, but informed the court that he knows someone who can speak Norwegian and promised to bring him in the next hearing. In his ruling, Magistrate Mbackeh informed the accused that the charges leveled against the him are temporal. He further stated that investigations are still ongoing, and ordered that the accused be remanded in custody on the grounds that he may interfere with witnesses.

This is very unfortunate! it also angers me. Negligence is dangerous! Tourism is an agent for change, and brings about changes in value systems and behaviour and thereby threatens indigenous identity. It brings changes in community structures, family relationships, collective traditional life styles, and morality. That is why we need to continually keep our people informed about the negative impacts of this "mana from heavens".
Young people below the age of 25 years continues to constitute around 64% (including those at the age of 10-24, round 31.1%) of the entire Gambian population. As far back as 1979 Wagner suggests that the older generation of Gambians have complained about the plight of their sons being exploited by tourists. There are traces of organised pimping and more occasional intermediary services by hotel guards, taxi drivers and others in contact with tourists. The Gambia is earning a reputation of paedophile tourists. Hernbäck, 2003; and Hamada, 2004; suggests that sex tourism have been taking place in The Gambia since in the 1970s. Hernbäck went further suggesting that older tourists have been buying sex from young Gambian men for a long time. A report that was released by the Government of The Gambia and UNICEF also reveals that sexual abuse and exploitation of children is on the rise in The Gambia. This report also finds that children are being targeted for sexual relations by adult foreigners and nationals. There are reports that suggests that sex tourists from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Germany, and Belgium exploit Gambian children and, in some cases, traffic them to Europe for prostitution and pornography. Because of Such behaviours and among others, The Tourism Master Plan of The Gambia stipulates that 67% of tourists that visited the country in a past survey reported that they had a bad experience and would not like to come back to The Gambia. So, we now know the problem, lets put the house in order!! its disgusting to hear such repports about this beautiful country, whose people and their cultures are prime attractions; one reason why we are also called the smiling coast Africa!!! |

Drammehkangi. Numbers. Self criticism. Nice. I like the way you present your ideas. Refreshing. |
diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.
Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |
