DailyNews Editorial: The Search For A New Way Forward Gambia’s Political Future
Monday, December 20, 2010

It sometimes astounds when one read some articles of Gambians at home and abroad on online newspapers with different opinions on the political future of The Gambia.

Online newspapers have made a u-turn in the development in the media in our era of technology. Many Gambians abroad use this medium to both received and disseminate news as soon as it happened. This has tremendously reduced the degree of being in doubt of happening at home.

Gambians abroad and those at home are busy debating bitterly about how to form a coalition government, while the APRC is expressing optimism of a landslide victory coupled with traditional chiefs campaigning for the crowning of President Jammeh as king.

The issue at hand in this country is not a partisan issue now. It is a great test of patriotism. But who are going to champion the cause. This is the question that all of us should try to ponder about for an answer.

Most Gambians engaged actively in politics subscribe to the feeling of individuals instead of their party programmes. This is clearly evident in the debates both on the internet and open discussions. Sentiments have overshadowed issues of paramount importance.

While the ruling APRC is trying all it can to control power, the opposition is also looking at ways to make a change of government by forming a coalition. Is not a secret in the country? They published their meetings in their efforts to come together to form an alliance. This has brought an ideological clash of staunch supporters and militants on the internet. But what is clear from the debates is that most of them either support or justify the move taken by their party leader as to what is the international standard of establishing an opposition alliance. Some are with the believe that the biggest party should lead for others to follow. Others believe that there is no second round of voting and therefore such an alliance may not be the right option; they called for a nomination of a single candidate from candidates through a primary.

This is a very interesting debate which should be given space to be widened so that citizens can be introduced to the culture of an open society where people debate about issues in the legitimate interest of the nation with no hard feelings. We welcome ideas from supporters, sympathizers and members of all parties including the ruling APRC to debate on the future of The Gambia’s political life ahead of circles of election, especially the nearest – 2011 presidential election.

We subscribe to the Gambian writer who said that society lives by ideas, and there is a need for intellectual intercourse between members of society. People should not sit on their ideas, especially those pertaining to the socio-political development of the nation.

Citizens have a duty to contribute their quota to political development of their nation.

We have entered a generation that both leaders and leadership aspirants should be taken to task, so as to gauge their competence and the viability of their programmes they sell to the public. It is the right of citizens to choose leaders but they can’t make the right choice if they are not enlightened.

The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) is very mute about civic matters in the country. They have been empowered by the constitution to execute their duties to enlighten the people. So what is the problem NCCE?

What is our political future? The Chiefs are campaigning for Kingship of Yahya Jammeh and Yankuba Colley always expressing optimism to win the 2011 election. The opposition divided on the formula for an alliance.

We must answer the question: What is our destiny?

As the overwhelming majority of Gambians already support Jammeh to maintain stability, security and development. It would be even better Halifa Salah to join APRC to bring his new ideas.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

Turk its always interesting to have diverse opinions.

There will always be opposition, opponents, dissent, victims, defiance and rebels against the system! Those categorised are searching for a better alternative & new way forward. Therefore there are proponents advocating that radical changes to the Gambia's political system are required for national progress; peace & stability!

There is impression that Jammeh/APRC have majority support but Jammeh is paranoid, the government is unstable, our democratic institutions are crumbling, becoming weaker & weaker
