Foroyaa Editorial: SENEGALO GAMBIAN RELATION AT A CROSSROADS After the Secretary General, office of the President issued the policy of the Government on Senegal; Foroyaa was interested in knowing the official response of the Senegalese government. Foroyaa gathered that the Senegalese Minister of Foreign Affairs did hold a press conference.
Senegalese Foreign Minister, Madikay Niang, on Thursday, 17 December, in Dakar held a press conference in which he said Senegal has been in touch with Nigeria following the discovery of arms and ammunitions allegedly destined for Gambia. He told journalists that the quantity of the consignment of the arms is enormous and it has the potential to destabilize the sub-region. He said this is a sub-regional problem and Senegal is interested in unearthing the truth. Explaining further, he pointed out that Tehran is supporting Dakar’s water and energy sector, and has invested millions of dollars in Senegal. He however added that given that Senegal’s security is paramount and that the sacked Iranian Foreign Minister has not provided Dakar with tangible information about the arms shipment, the Wade administration thought it is prudent for Dakar to recall its ambassador in Tehran. Following the discovery of the arms and ammunitions, he said President Wade has contacted Nigerian President GoodLuck Jonathan on the issue. He pointed out that Dakar has already briefed American President Barrack Obama, ECOWAS and the United Nations Security Council. Foreign Minister Niang said Dakar bore no grudge against Banjul, adding that Senegalese and Gambians are one people divided by geographical boundaries. He indicated that Senegal wants to live peacefully side by side with Gambia. The Gambia has broken relation with Iran and has expelled the Iranian envoy in the Gambia and Senegal has also recalled its ambassador to Iran. This confirms that something is wrong somewhere. The Gambian authorities claim that the records show that the arms were destined for Nigeria. The Gambian Foreign Minister should hold a Press conference to explain Gambia’s position on the arms seized in Nigeria, the efforts the Government has made to know the truth and the reason why it broke relations with Iran. We want to hear facts from both sides so that the public mind could be shaped by objective reality.

Regardless of the original destination of the arms or whom they were to be used against, the Sheikh made a huge diplomatic faux pas on how the official response of the Gambia was handled. It looked amateur, disorganized and without any sense of purpose. Something as sensitive and important as this should have been handled by the Sheikh himself of Mr. Tangara not Njogu Bah. The potency and importance of a message is as important as messenger conveying the message. I have my doubt that those arms were NOT bought with the direct/indirect involvement of the Government of the Gambia. The Sheikh is not that crazy to buy them to be used against Senegal. If he was directly complicit in the arms deal, he would have not abruptly severe ties with Iran. |

Not for one moment that good thinking Gambians will permit another scale of deception and drifts. Let Abdul (Aziz) Jammeh and Abdul-Laye Wade clean up. They are just two out of millions who call Gambia and Senegal home. Can't screw up a whole population. |
