This from the D.O.,those with a disability are still regarded as "a handicap" and not as a person who can contribute to society by some,I hope that this workshop can go some way to solving attitudes of some members of Gambian society.

Equality disability training held in CRR

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, November 23, 2010
The Gambia Federation of the Disabled ended a two-day Disability Equality Training workshop recently at the Governor's bantaba in Janjangbureh, CRR.
The Big Lottery, UK in collaborationwith Volunteer Service Oversea (VSO) funded the training. Addressing participants, regional governor, Alhaji Ganyie Touray implored them to take the training seriously, since it is necessary to support the education of the disabled.

Abubakarr Kule a VSO volunteer informed that the magnitude of disability in The Gambia is high and it is at rate of 16 per thousand (1.6%) of the population according to 1998 national disability survey, compared to 28 per thousand (2.8%) of the population from the National Population and Housing Census of April 2003.

He expressed optimism that at the end of the workshop, participants will be able to discuss and understand disability from a social perspective, as well as gain information on the status of disability in the country by using statistics from research to understand the barriers to the disabled to access services and action to take to address them.

He encouraged them to treat persons with disability with equality, employing them, giving them the same opportunity and respect as non-disabled people. The training was organized for the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) members, staff of the Area Council, MDFT, VDC and WDC in the region.
