Monday, November 22, 2010 The president of the Republic has again enjoined the citizenry to nurture unity and disregard their differences, describing unity as strength and progress, while urging Gambians to work together in the interest of national development. His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh was speaking to reporters Friday morning at the Banjul International Airport shortly after returning from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he joined millions of Muslims from across the world in performing this year's Hajj, which is the fifth pillar of Islam.
The Gambian leader, who was accompanied to the Holy Land by the First Lady, Her Excellency Madam Zineb Yahya Jammeh, the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Basic and Secondary Education, Tourism and Culture, and the deputy minister of Petroleum, Dr Momodou Tangara, Fatou Lamin Faye, Fatou Mass Jobe-Njie and Teneng Ba-Jaiteh respectively, amongst others, was met on arrival at the airport by the vice president and minister of Women's Affairs, Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy, amongst other key officials. President Jammeh in his traditional airport interview told journalists that if citizens of the country nurture and consolidate unity, The Gambia would develop rapidly.
"I want to wish every Gambian every success. I pray for the country and my message to the citizens is that they must have watched Saudi Television and have seen almost three million pilgrims converging in one place working together in unison without a problem and the Hajj went on smoothly. So if we unite, we would develop our country very fast. So unity is strength and is progress. We should forget that we are different tribes; we should forget that some come from Basse, Kartong, Foni and others because it is one country," he stressed.
President Jammeh further stressed that if the citizens put their hearts and minds together, The Gambia could be the greatest country on earth, thus challenging everyone to maintain unity and work together for the interest of the country.
Virtues of sharing and caring
Commenting on the importance of caring and sharing, the president equally challenged citizens to also nurture caring and sharing at all times and not just only during Muslim feasts, stressing that those virtues must be a continual activity.
He said: "Sharing should not come only during Muslim feasts; Koriteh, Tobaski and Ramadan and for the rest of the year you don't care about your neighbour. Sharing and caring for each other should be a continuous process and should not be only when you have feasts that you think of the less fortunate. If we care for each other, we would be able to minimise the suffering of others. The only way to eradicate poverty is for us to work together and share with the less fortunate members of the society." The Gambian leader also cautioned people not to sit on their laurels but to also make efforts to be able to sustain themselves in view of the fact that one cannot continue to be dependent on people.
"So every Gambian and every human being should make an effort to sustain oneself. Where due to circumstances beyond your control you cannot be able to sustain yourself, then the neighbourhood can come out and assist you. Let us strive to live on our own, let us eat what we grow and grow what we eat rather than depending on others," he said.
President Jammeh also seized the opportunity to implore citizens to take the destiny of the country into their own hands, while deploring the exorbitant pricing of rams during the Tobaski feast period.
"When I left people thought that I had no rams to sell. I was told the prices they were charging for those malnourished rams. But when you look at it, who are those selling? Are they Gambians? No! They [foreigners] are here to make money and they want to make money. What is wrong with a Gambian taking your own money, buy the rams and sell it to the people? Last year I told people that if you buy a lamb now it would not cost you more than D300. If you take care of it you would have your own ram next Tobaski. But we want to wait until last minutes and start rushing around," he stated.
He urged the people to take seriously whatever positive venture that can sustain them, as far as it is their means of livelihood, something he said would only pay dividend. He continued: "So in a nutshell, those who are supposed to be farmers, let us take our farming seriously; those who are supposed to work in offices let them work with seriousness. Here in The Gambia we are taking things for granted and that is very unfortunate," he urged, while commending the women of this country for their exemplary hard work.
The president of the Republic concluded by reiterating the need to nurture unity for development not just within the country but Africa as a whole, stressing that without it the continent would remain poor.

It is simply ironical that the President's words does not match his deeds. Peace and unity starts from the top... Let the President practice what he preaches by acting the acts. Words are cheap!!!!
Allow citizens to express their opinions freely and openly... release all political prisoners and forgive the ones that have been unjustly convicted... and then call for peace, reconcialition and tolerance.
You are in position of power and therefore has control of state machinery and can breach the peace!!!
No amount of words without deeds can convince citizens. This is simply an attempt for cheap publicity and the fools are falling for it again and again!!!
Call us whatever names you want... it wouldn't distract us from publishing... publishing and publishing.... Don't read it if you don't like it period!!! Sell out!!! |

Gents........please ! I am not the moderator here and everyone is able to express their own opinions on bantaba in cyberspace,I am not a Gambian as you all should know now,BUT surely if "both" sides wish to discuss matters that are in the common intersts of the Gambian people then its far better to have "discussions" and "dialogue" about matters rather than just slinging mud and getting nowhere. I love the Gambia and its people and of course wish to see a peaceful and improving Gambia. |

toubab, thank you again for the sensible postings. Until we begin to respect everyone's views we will not get anywhere..
I agree with you that we should focus on the issues but should not allow people who see things only in their views to alienate others by bullying them with name calling... citizens will not stop discussing the issues because others have bigger mouths and can come here and insult them. That is a principle we all must defend here on Bantaba. It has been going on for far too long and nobody seems to be able to do something about it! It won't be tolerated period!
