CORONER SUBMITS REPORT ON FADERA’S DEATH
The Standard: APRIL 8, 2022

https://standard.gm/gambia-news/coroner-submits-report-on-faderas-death/

Magistrate Sidi Jabarteh, who has been presiding over the inquest into the ‘suspicious’ death of former Gambian ambassador to the US Dawda Fadera, has formally submitted her report to the Chief Justice, credible sources told The Standard. The inquiry took a little over two weeks and has called about ten witnesses, including the widow of the late ambassador and several doctors from the EFSTH and Medicare Clinic. The inquest was set up by an order from the Attorney General following what officials called reasonable suspicion in the circumstances of Fadera’s death.

Almost immediately after his death, rumours started flying that Fadera, who was admitted at EFSTH and operated on, might have been poisoned. His family demanded an autopsy which was done but the results are not made public yet.

Judicial sources informed The Standard that the report is now with the Chief Justice who would share it with the relevant authorities and concerned people.

It is not known when the report will be made public.

INQUEST INTO FADERA’S DEATH ENDS

The Standard:
By Binta A Bah

The Standard has been reliably informed that the inquest into the death of former Gambian ambassador to the U.S Dawda Fadera is now completed. The inquiry was setup by the Chief Justice on the order of the Attorney General following ‘reasonable suspicion’ in the circumstances of his death. In the last sitting yesterday, two doctors gave their testimonies. They are Kehinde Olanshile Oduntan who examined Fadera when he was rushed to Medicare and Lamin K Ceesay, who was the last to attend to him before pronouncing him dead at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital.

In his testimony before the Coroner, Magistrate Sidi Jobarteh, Dr Oduntan, who specialises in surgery, narrated that Dawda Fadera was brought to Medicare Clinic in the middle of the night complaining of a two-day constipation. He said examinations later revealed that he had a swollen abdomen around the umbilical area and his vital signs were showing a high pulse rate and a very low oxygen circulation.

Doctor Oduntan said he suggested to the family that Fadera needed to be operated on but they (the family) requested a referral to EFSTH while he was waiting for test results.

The doctor continued to state that Fadera was referred and admitted at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital. The Coroner then told the doctor that what the record showed is that the patient was interacting with people until the last stage when his antibiotic was being administered and that was the time he started having shocks which led to his death. “Medically, can you say what is the cause of that?” the Magistrate inquired. In response, Dr Oduntan said one of the possible reasons for that could be an allergic reaction.

“But for this to happen, the patient must have had previous allergy to this medication. It may not cause death suddenly but in later stage, if assistance is not given, it can lead to death,” he said.

Meanwhile, the second doctor to testify Lamin K Ceesay, who was the last to attend to the ambassador, told the inquiry that he was at home when he got a call from the hospital that the condition of Fadera had changed and he was needed at the hospital.

He said when he reached the hospital, he found that nurses were trying to help revive Fadera who had no pulse and his heart was no longer beating.

A medical examiner who performed autopsy on the body of Dawda Fadera, the deceased Gambian ambassador to the United States, testified at the coroner’s inquiry at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The inquest is led by Principal Magistrate Sidi Jobarteh of Banjul.

Wednesday’s sitting, according to judicial sources, was the fourth since the inquest commenced.

Ambassador Fadera was on a visit to Banjul when he fell ill and was admitted at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital where he subsequently died on 20th February 2022.

In the wake of his death, rumours of him being poisoned gained currency.

According to reports reaching The Standard, this led to the family requesting for an autopsy before the body was interred.

Judicial sources said during Wednesday’s hearing, the doctor [name withheld] who conducted the autopsy on the body was called to testify and shed light on the cause of death.

The attorney general has written a request to the chief justice ordering an inquest into the death of Dawda Fadera, former Gambian ambassador to the United States.

Since the ambassador died at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital on Sunday, speculation has been making the rounds that he had been poisoned.

The Standard has learnt that an autopsy was conducted on the body before it was released for interment late Monday evening. The result of the autopsy has not been made public.

However, The Standard saw a copy of an official letter from the AG’s Chambers addressed to the chief justice ordering an inquest in the death. The letter read:

“Following circumstances which raised reasonable suspicion with regard to the cause of death of [Dawda Fadera], the Honourable Attorney General acting under Section 11 of the Coroner’s Act Cap 7, Laws of The Gambia, would like Your Lordship to order an inquest touching on the death of Dawda Fadera.”

In response, the chief justice assigned Principal Magistrate Sidi Jobarteh of the Banjul Magistrates Court as the coroner to inquire into the death.

Dawda Fadera was born in Nema, Kiang East, and attended Muslim High School before bagging degrees in Sierra Leone and Britain. He served as a permanent secretary and head of the civil service before being appointed The Gambia’s ambassador to Washington.
