WAG tribute to H. F. Njai: Gambian publisher and author

The Point: Published on Thursday, October 23, 2014

The Executive and entire membership of the Writers Association of The Gambia (WAG) conveys profound sadness and sincere condolences to the family ofDr Harr Freeya Njaiwho passedaway after a brief illness this week in Dakar,Senegal.
Harr was a trail-blazing author of children’s literature and worked hard to develop the culture of reading among Gambian children.

With her debut City Boy: Sanseh Be Mata Gejeh (2011), which she did with Connie Gomez, master lebkat, and Samba and Kumba (2013) another reader for children.

Harr also ran a quality oriented publishing outfit called Majaga Publishing, which has published young Gambian female authors like Kaddy Jawara.

In April 2014, she kindly accepted WAG’s invitation to give the keynote speech at the World Book Day.She extolled the need for Gambian writers to exploit the possibilities offered by IT in marketing their works and encouraged Gambian women to take up writing and publishing.

Harr’s contribution to Gambian literature is indeed immense and, for this, history will remember her always. We will miss her warm and radiant personality and her infectious enthusiasm for everything cultural and Gambian.

We pray that her beautiful soul is welcomed to the highest heavens, inshallah!

To her family, relatives and colleagues, we extend our sincere condolences again.

Hassoum Ceesay

WAG Vice President
