3. THE LIFE OF BISHOP JOHNSON
TRIBUTE
THE LIFE OF BISHOP JOHNSON
The Most Reverend Dr. Solomon Tilewa Ethelbert Willie Johnson, the 9th Primate and Metropolitan Archbishop of the Church of the Province of West Africa (CPWA), 1st Archbishop of the Internal Province of West Africa (IPWA), the 6th Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the Gambia and the Chairman of the Gambia Christian Council, on Tuesday 21 January, 2o 14, transited earthly life for eternity, abruptly. Almighty God withdrew His soul from his body while the Primate was at the zenith of his ecclesiastical career.
"Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall return. The LORD gave; the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name o f the LORD". The Primate transited earthly life for eternity abruptly, while the Primate was at the zenith of his ecclesiastical career. He shepherded the Anglican faithful in nine nation states o f the CPWA, ten dioceses in the country of Ghana, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Guinea Conakry, Bissau, Liberia, The Gambia, Senegal and Cape Verde Islands. There was no other higher ecclesiastical position for the Primate and Metropolitan to climb on this earth.
Dr. Solomon Tilewa was the second of two sons of the family of Samuel Daniel and Eliza Leonora Johnson (nee George). Unlike Victor Clayton his elder brother, Solomon Tilewa was a Banjul thorough-bred- those whom we refer to as Samba-Banjul. His parents took him to local Methodist Schools. He entered the Albion Infant School in 1959 and three years later, progressed to Wesley Primary School from 1962-66 in Banjul.
Having passed the highly competitive Primary 6 Common Entrance national examination, he earned a place at the Gambia High School in September 1966. A gain, soon after his ordinary Level Examination, Solomon Tilewa was recruited to serve as Wood-Work Pupil-Teacher in 1972-74 by his alma mater. He played football, cricket and basketball very well and was also an athlete throughout his school career. He met the qualifications to serve in both junior and senior school teams.
Tilewa was a member of the first - five of the Gambia BasketBall Team while at school and they won many laurels. In the twilight of his life, he took on the sport of tennis, he thoroughly enjoyed both playing and watching the sport on Television. In 1971, at the height of a budding amateur acting career, he was given a lead role in a pageant marking 150 Years of Methodism in The Gambia [1821-1971].
This play was written by the prolific Gambian poet and playwright - Mr. Gabriel John Roberts. The rehearsals were directed by a (GHS) Senior Mistress and English Teacher Mrs. Cecilia M. R. Cole, a woman who later became his mother-in-law.
Tilewa played the part of a West Indian minister who hailed from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, the Reverend Eric St. Claire-Clarke; o n that evening of the pageant, Solomon Tilewa erupted to stardom. He mimicked the character, voice, intonation and gait of the Reverend, impeccably.
Despite their seeming liberal and ecumenical outlook to church life, Mama Eliza and Papa Sam (SD) grounded Solomon Tilewa in the foundations of Christian doctrines at St. Mary's 'King' Church. At infancy, he was enrolled at Sunday school where Mama Eliza was a teacher. Papa Sam was a superb contralto singer in the choir. Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, he took along Solomon Tilewa to be trained as a soprano singer. This was a failed effort; nonetheless, Solomon Tilewa's interest was not on the hymns but on the ministry of the word and the celebration of rites and rubrics of the church.
He studied intently the high-church Anglican liturgy which is distinctive of St. Mary's. The young man Solomon Tilewa became an active member of the Anglican Young Peoples' Association (AYPA) whose activities were headquartered at the Parish Church of St. Mary's Solomon. Tilewa adopted his classroom friends for substitute biological brothers and sisters.
At the age of 15-years, while just at Form 111, catastrophe struck the family, Mama Liza passed on to eternity. At the end of his two-year contract as a Woodwork Pupil Teacher at the Gambia High School, Solomon applied for work at the Ministry of Agriculture where he was recruited as a Trainee Forest Surveyor and posted to the Forestry Department [1975-77].
He had three work sites, Abuko Nature Reserve, Kabafita Forest Reserve and the Nyambai Forest Reserve. He loved Nyambai Forest the most and frequently narrated about the beauty of the silence of the forests. He considered the Gmelina trees as his living audience; it was at Nyambai that God called him to become a Priest. Having observed and tested him, his mentor, the 5th Bishop of the Diocese of Gambia, The Right Reverend Jean Riga Elisee accepted Solomon Tilewa's offer for the priesthood. He was sent to an ecumenical seminary in Nigeria Trinity Union Theological College, Umuahia in Imo State, from 1977 to 80. Solomon survived the post Biafran War experience and the intense three years of academic and ministerial training.
He earned a Diploma in Theology (Dip.Th), successfully in 1980. He was ordained a Deacon in 1979 and was 'laid-hands' upon again as a Priest in 1980. Upon his return to The Gambia in 1980, The Reverend Father Solomon Tilewa was promptly posted to serve in the rural settlement of Farafenni at the North Bank Division in the Anglican Parish of the African Martyrs of the Anglican Diocese of Gambia. Four months later, he got married and his wife - Priscilla Gladys joined him. Priscilla Gladys was a graduate teacher; together they started a family and served the community from their base at the Anglican Vocational Training Centre, Farafenni. In September 1982, Solomon Tilewa returned to academia, to the University of Durham, UK.
At Durham, he played cricket for sport and studied hard in the library. In 1985, he submitted a thesis titled: The Impact of African Communal Ritual on Modern Christian Missions 1821- 1965 (Durham, 1985) as partial fulfillment for a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. (Hons)) degree in Theology. He graduated with Honours. Ten years after his ordination as Priest, in February 1990, the Reverend Solomon Tilewa Ethelbert Willie Johnson was consecrated and enthroned as the 6th Bishop of his Church.
Archbishop Tilewa led by example in Inter-Faith matters. Throughout the two decades as Head ofMission at the GCC, His Grace routinely cultivated close personal relationships with the Chairman of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC), the Imam Ratib of Banjul and other Muslim leaders.
These proved useful during moments of crises, whenever and wherever threats to traditional Christian-Muslim harmonies were detected in The Gambia; frank dialogue would be initiated to quickly bring justice and peace to any disrupted community. Genuine Inter-Faith relationship has led to him being invited to a number of Muslim religious gatherings (Gamo).
In March 2004,following an invitation from the Inter- Diocesan West Africa Link (IDWAL) in the United Kingdom, Bishop Tilewa delivered a paper which accurately defined the state of Christian -Muslim Relations in the Gambia. Speaking on behalf of the total Christian community, in general, Bishop Tilewa gave testimony that we proclaim the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ daily in action and word.
Any compromise in our faith would not bring us closer to our Muslim brothers and sisters, but further away. A people of God tend to lose respect for a weak faith, whether our own or another. We continue to give almighty God all the thanks and praise for the peace we experience in The Gambia.
During the Lambeth Conference e in July, 1998 he delivered an address on "Christian/Muslim relations in the Gambia" in a lecture hall of bishops, their spouses and other guests. Bishop Tilewa's acknowledged wisdom was sought by government on several occasions.
He was invited to serve as a member of the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) of The Gambia, the body credited with developing the first Draft of the 1996 Constitution of The Gambia. Then, as it traced a renewed path to democracy, the Gambia Government created a noble institution of impartial adjudicators on election matters called the Provisional Independent Electoral Commission (PIEC).
This body was headed by the respected educationist and playwright - Mr. Gabriel John Roberts. Bishop Johnson was requested to become the PIEC's first Vice-Chairman [1996-97]. However, soon after the 1996 Presidential and General Elections, Bishop Tilewa was promoted to the position of Chairman of the now Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) [1997-2000]. Bishop Tilewa was twice elected Chairman of The Association of Non Government Associations (TANGO) [1992-94 & 2006-8] and twice appointed Chairman of the Board of Governors of a huge public parastatals which supervised the award of government contracts and consultancies - The GAMWORKS Agency [1993-94 & 2007-8]. During his terms of office, Bishop Tilewa served both agencies with distinction. As a matter of fact, he was the first Chairman of the Gamworks agency.
Bishop Tilewa was an indefatigable inter-church activist and distinguished himself as the Ecumenist Extraordinaire. His ecumenism transcended race, tribe, sex, denomination and borders. His passion for fulfilling the Jesus Christ's high-priestly prayer "that they may be one” [John 17:11b] knew no bounds. This Anglican of Anglicans in West Africa would attend and share Christian worship at any home or sacred space, often unannounced. He would partner with Christians of all shades, local and international, to prayer, advocacy and mission. He became Chairman of GCC on several occasions (1990-2014 ); was President of the Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in West Africa (FECCIWA) once (2003-5); and, up to the time of his death was an elected Member of the General Committee of the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) (:wn-18), and an elected Member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC (2013-2113). He was at ease with primates, prelates and patriarchs discussing frankly and led by God's Spirit.
He was a man of huge stature yet he was very down to earth in his interaction with people. There was never a dull moment with him around. Bishop Tilewa’s relationships cut across all peoples, all classes and sexes. He had time and kind amusing words for everyone who crossed his path.
He was a devoted family man who ensured that there was adequate provision for his family. At each annual synod/conference of the Methodist Church of The Gambia, he thanked the clergy and delegates for their generosity in giving him such a good wife. He was proud of his children, that even on the evening of his death he spoke with joy about the achievements of NJilan, Jeggan and Dado to his tennis mates at Fajara Club.
Priscilla Modupeh (Mummy), Eliza Njilan, Francis Jeggan and Clothilda Dado are eternally grateful to God for having given them this fine specimen of a husband and father for so many years!! May God reward him for all his labours and grant him a place of peace and bliss with Him in heaven!! Well done scholar, erudite speaker, public servant, interfaith promoter, ecumenist extraordinaire, Anglican Primate, endowed composer of prayers, excellent father and devoted husband!!!

1. Let The Archbishop Rest Peacefully
On the eve of the interment of Archbishop Solomon Telewa Johnson, we pay our final respects to the man who stood up for the Constitution of The Republic of The Gambia, the rule of law and the dignity of every Gambian, Christians, Muslims, agnostics, and animists alike, and for which the dictatorship tried to extract as many pounds of flesh as it could with little discernible success, except, perhaps, the story you are about to read.
Sidi Sanneh -----------------------------------------
Bishop Solomon Telewa Johnson became the first Gambian to be elevated to the level of Archbishop of the Anglican Church of the Province of West Africa in September 2012. He met his untimely death last month on the tennis court from an apparent heart attack while engaging in one of his favorite pastimes.
While the nation and the entire Anglican community around the world were in shock and eulogizing the Archbishop in their own individual ways, the dictatorship in Banjul under the active leadership of Yaya Jammeh, continue to engage in, what can only be described as, disdainful acts, yes, even in death, against the Archbishop, his family, his Church, his countrymen and countrywomen.
The Archbishop ran afoul of the dictatorship for being the only IEC Chairman to take the regime to task for failing to comply with the Local Government Act governing the conduct of elections. He also insisted on on-the-spot counting of ballots and not to have them transported distances from the polling stations, inviting vote tampering, ballot stuffing and other shenanigans......

"The Rt. Reverend Tilewa believed in the ONENESS of mankind before their creator, a belief that permeated as well as showed through all his public prayers and statements.
Taking over from Muslim prayer he would say: “And so we continue in prayer”. This shows that the Rt. Reverend saw no division between what was prayed before him and what he himself was going to pray. It signaled continuity in and towards the approach to the ONE God: the God of Israel, the God of Christianity, the God of Islam.
It is that oneness that has always underpinned his messages and relationships be they official or personal, religious or secular".....

4. SERVICE IN WORD AND DEED ARCHBISHOP SOLOMON TILEWA JOHNSON HAS DEPARTED IN BODY
Foroyaa Editorial: Published on Sunday, 26 January 2014
Archbishop Solomon Tilewa Johnson has departed in body, but is still with us in spirit. He united religious stewardship with civil stewardship in a manner that enabled him to serve both God and country in word and deeds.
He rendered to the people what is theirs by servicing as a deputy to the Chairperson of the Provisional Independent Commission and Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission. He was also a member of the Constitutional Review Commission and has played a major part in shaping the Republican and Democratic values and Instruments of the Republic.
He presided over the demarcation of Constituency boundaries with such honesty, impartiality and precision that some did not see him to be suitable to carry out such a task.
Up to this day, his recommendations are gathering dust and would see the light of the day once a genuine constituency boundaries commission is established. He has presided over the affairs of Non Governmental Organisations aiming to give social support services to deprived communities and persons.
He also served the cause of the needy as the pioneers of his faith did. He has given blessing and prayers to gatherings aiming to improve peace on earth and good will towards all men and women.
His heart has always beat in unison with the heart beats of all those who yearn for a more humane, just and caring humanity.
He did not rise to the pedestal of religious stewardship to play prophet or god. He walked humbly among his congregation, neighbourhood and beyond to be his bothers’ and sisters’ keeper. He served with dignity, humility and passion up to the end.

The Rt. Revd Dr Solomon Tilewa Ethelbert Willie Johnson, First Archbishop of the Internal Province of West Africa and the Ninth Primate and Metropolitan of the Church of the Province of West Africa, has passed away.
His fateful death took place on Tuesday night, 21 January 2014 at the Medical Research Council, where he was taken for treatment immediately after he suddenly collapsed when playing tennis with his friends at the Fajara Club in Fajara on Tuesday evening.
According to his elder brother, Rev Victor Clayton-Johnson, who spoke to The Point yesterday, the late Archbishop was well and fine before his passing away.
The Archbishop complained of no ailment that could be associated with his death, he said, adding that all he could say was a “heart failure”.
“He used to go to play tennis at the Fajara Club. With the excitement, he wanted to hit a ball and he just collapsed. They rushed him to the MRC and did all they could to bring him back to normal condition, they could not, and he had his call,” Rev Johnson explained.......
