UNCOLLECTED GARBAGE HEAPS HIGH AT SK MARKET

By Nelson Manneh

Uncollected garbage has heaped high to roof level at Serrekunda Market. Vendors, uncollected garbage heapbuyers and passers-by could be seen covering their noses because of the stench emanating from the garbage heap full of maggots and parasites.

Yesterday 28th May 2015, vendors were seen selling foodstuff just beside the uncollected garbage heap, a source for public health problems.

One vendor who sells beside the garbage heap, Mr. Momodou Bah, said they are not comfortable with the situation. He said they have fewer customers now than before due to the uncollected garbage heap. “Whenever we meet some of our costumers outside the market and ask them why they are no longer coming to buy from us they will tell us that our place stinks a lot. But this is the only place where we can derive income for our living,’’ explained a distraught Mr. Bah. He called on the authorities responsible to come to their aid.

A buyer, Madam Ramatoulie Camara said she has stopped getting to the vicinity of uncollected garbage heap as it is very unhealthy. “How can one buy something to eat from such a place?” She asked. “When you talk about health, it is not hygienic for you to buy food here,’’ Madam Camara asserted.

This reporter tried to meet the Public Relation Officer [PRO] of Kanifing Municipal Council [KMC] to get her part of the story but could not discuss with her due to her arrangements.
