To Our Beloved Maya Angelou
Our Storyteller, Poetess, Civil Rights Activist, Author Academic, and Actress
Her spirit now has taken flight to join Our Ancestors
In full acknowledgement that her words have awakened our consciousness
Touched many hearts and open many minds
Changed many lives with her inspiration
And will continue to do so for eternity!

Maya Angelou knew
Why the caged bird sings
Then unmuted her voice
To speak again
She galvanised herself and gathered her wings
Sharing her gift with all of us
To make us all rise!

Maya Angelou’s nurturing voice and quick wit
She embraced African Culture lived and worked in Ghana
Then radiated Kunta Kente’s Grand Mother’s love
When she starred in Roots.

Maya Angelou touched our hearts
With glinted brown eyes and her infectious giggle
She celebrated empowered Black women
Making us wise with her compassion
She wasn’t afraid to openly discuss taboos
A phenomenal woman who courageously spoke her truth

Maya Angelou’s Mighty pen
Spoke to humanity and fought the Pan African cause
Using her gifts to influence change.
Her Legacy will live on throughout the ages
As generations of the Global Audience rediscover
And reacquaint themselves with Maya’s body of work
Amusing them endlessly with her wisdom
Guiding them through life’s tapestry

I will not weep for Maya Angelou for too long
For I will still hear her verses in Birdsong
Celebrating life with her courage, confidence, and humour!
Maya Angelou our African American Poet Laureate of the people.
May you Rest in Perfect Peace!
