Hello everyone
Can anyone advise on inoculations needed for travel to Gambia at the moment?
Which malaria medication is recommended at this time?
Any advice on how to do the above things cheaply?
It can be a big additional cost to a holiday compared to european destinations.

I have used the company you suggested. All very quick and easy.
My doctors wanted to charge £15 for prescription before you take into account the almost £3 per tablet.
Prescription on line is £10 and tablets £1.75 each.

Bev, I went to my own GP for the prescription so it didn't cost me anything. The main thing is to get a prescription for Atovaquone 250mg/Proguanil 100mg and not Malarone ,although its the same thing. I send my script to travelpharm.com and if you order enough tablets delivery is free. Be sure to send your prescription to them although they will provide one for £10.Hope this is of use to you. |

It is the generic ones I am going to get. £2.93 at doctors, but i will go elsewhere.
Which online site do you use? Lloyds pharmacy looks pretty good.
What do you pay for your prescription?

Bev,what anti malarials are you going to get. £2.93 sounds like a lot to me for one tablet. I got generic malarone at £1.75 each online. |

I've had my Yellow Fever jab today. Getting my Malaria Tablets prescription on Wednesday. The prescription is £15 and then cost of tablets on top. At pharmacy at surgery the tablets are £2.93 EACH. Will be cheaper at supermarket I think. |

Bev, I've just come back from a 10 day trip to the Gambia. Officially to travel from UK to the Gambia you don't need any innoculations but if you haven't had a tetanus jab for a while ( if you haven't been for 5 years) this would be the one I would go for. As far as anti- malarials go you have a choice as Momodou says. What did you take on your last trip.? Personally I would buy them in the UK as some need to be initially taken before you leave. |

I'm going to the nurse at my doctors for advice. I've just realised that it's 10 years, YES 10 years since my first visit, so lots of my jabs are out of date. It could be an expensive and painful visit! |

The medical Board control and set the standards. Off course there will always be a difference if you buy a drug from Serrekunda market or at a recognised drug store on Kairaba Avenue or West Field.
I am sure you would find made in India.
Do you have a website in UK on what vaccine and medication to take for travel to different parts of the world? |

Thanks. Are drugs in Gambia definitely what they say they are? Or is there a market for fraud, the same as in India, for example.

Hi Gambiabev, Dont you have an official website in the UK for advice on the vaccines needed for travelling to different parts of the world? We have such here in Denmark at http://www.ssi.dk (Statens Serum Institute).
Some of the vaccines depend on the duration of your stay and what kind of contact you are going to have.
The most common advice is the following vaccination:
Difteri & Tetanus
Yellow Fever
Hepatitis
Meningitis
Malaria medicin:Meflokin
Malarone
Doxyclin
Vibradox
I took Vibradox (Doxyclin) the last time I was in Gambia but should have bought it in the Gambia because it was almost 5 times cheaper than Denmark.
Your GP should be in a better position to advice. |
