The founder of The Gambia Clubfoot Foundation, a local charity has disclosed that his foundation is committed to fighting clubfoot problems in the country.
Dr. Ebou Camara was speaking at the start of a six-day training of medical doctors on basic ponseti clubfoot treatment. Miracle feet, based in the U.S.A. is funding the training.
The foundation came up with this initiative of helping people with clubfoot problems during their visit to hospitals in the country.
The training, he said, was designed to equip doctors with the knowledge and skills to fight against clubfoot in the country.
“We now registered more than 300 patients and we know there are more. That’s why we’re organising this training for health workers in Serrekunda Hospital and Banjul to start the treatment in the country. We have equipment to be used to treat babies’ born with the problem,” he said.
He thus called on the government to join them in eradicating clubfoot in The Gambia, saying they cannot do it alone, thus the need for collaboration from government in either way.
Dr. Camara disclosed that in the past the foundation had supported some children for overseas treatment in America and they are also planning to take other patients.
Dr. Emmanuel Samwel Kowero, a consultant from Tanzania, who will be tutoring the practical aspect to the trainers, explained that he saw the spirit of helping people with clubfoot in the face of the organisers.
“As our population grows, we will have more patients and need strategy to cure it. For sustainability, we cannot only depend on donors; instead the government should help build the partnership with the foundation,” he added.
Also speaking, Dr. Alagie Manneh at the Kanifing General Hospital indicated that without the support of Kanifing Hospital, it would have been difficult for them to carry out such a great initiative. He stated that their mission is to treat children born with clubfoot.
Karamo Manneh, the Chief Executive Officer of Kanifing Hospital stated that clubfoot is a problem in the country, saying globally 174, 000 are born with clubfoot which needs to be tackled.
While thanking the Health Ministry, Minteh also challenged the trainers to be steadfast and teach others.
Dr. Samba Ceesay, the acting director health services, welcomed the initiative, maintaining that his ministry is committed to upgrading the general services of the country’s health sector.

Gambia Clubfoot Foundation celebrates World Clubfoot Day

The Gambia Clubfoot Foundation and partners last Saturday commemorated World Clubfoot Day in The Gambia.
The day was set aside to commemorate the birth of Dr Ignacio Ponseti, who initiated the Ponseti Method to treat clubfoot. The event is also meant to raise awareness about clubfoot disability and its prevention using the Ponseti method.
At the ceremony, Ebou Camara, founder of The Gambia Clubfoot Foundation and country director, said the commemoration was held in a form of a seminar meant to raise awareness among people of the availability of free treatment of children in The Gambia born with disabilities and their parents.
"The Gambia started this treatment using Ponseti method to treat clubfoot children fully in January 2019 as a pilot treatment scheme through the support of the Ministry of Health at Kanifing General Hospital and Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital and followed by Brikama District Hospital.
Camara acknowledged that currently, the foundation has facilitated training for 23 Gambian healthcare workers who are providing free clubfoot treatment in 3 clinics in the country.
The team, he added, has successfully treated over 293 clubfooted children in the Gambia within a span of four years all founded by Miracle Feet a charity organisation based in North Carolina, USA.
“Kanifing General Hospital enrolled 127 patients, 48 of them are on brace maintenance. Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital enrolled 108 patients, 44 of them are on brace maintenance, while Brikama District Hospital equally enrolled 58 patients of which 41 are brace maintenance. We have a total of 133 patients currently in brace maintenance."
He spoke of his foundation’s resolve to accelerate efforts to support other hospitals such as Farafenni General Hospital in the North Bank Region to become a clubfoot treatment centre, while plans are also in the offing to train 7 Gambian healthcare workers in basic and advanced Ponseti skills by next week.
“We will start the process of consultation with the team and in partnership with the office of Director of Health Services at the Ministry of Health." he stated.
Ebrima Nyassi, assistant country director of The Turkish Corporation and Coordination Agency (TIKKA), said the latter renders assistance to the government of The Gambia after the formalisation of bilateral ties between the Republics of The Gambia and Turkey.
"TIKKA has been in the Gambia since 2018 and has built so many projects in different health sectors. The agency also established the first clubfoot clinic in Brikama and the first oxygen plant at Ndemban Clinic in Bakau."
"Each year up to 200,000 children are born with Clubfoot and it is our responsibility to put efforts together to help in treatment.”

Clubfoot Foundation opens treatment centre at Brikama Hospital

The Gambia Clubfoot Foundation recently launched the first-ever clubfoot treatment centre at Brikama District Hospital.
The centre, funded by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), consists of a treatment room, patients waiting area and toilet facility.
Dr Ibou Camara, Founder/National Coordinator of The Gambia Clubfoot Foundation, recalled that since the commencement of their treatment, they have provided over 200 free treatments for children with clubfoot with support from Miracle Feet.
He added that Brikama as the largest district having a treatment centre means a lot to them, further calling for partnership from both local and Government to expand and decentralise the treatment across the country.
Deputising for the Minister of Health, Dr Fatoumatta Dibba, stated that the opening of the treatment centre in Brikama would now ensure quality healthcare treatment for clubfoot patient as well as bring smiles to faces of children and their parents.
She thanked the foundation for complementing the Ministry of Health in promoting quality health in the country.
She also urged them to extend their services to other regions in the country.
Mrs Sule Bayar, TIKA Coordinator, said The Gambia Clubfoot Foundation has been conducting regular treatment sessions, while battling with the challenge of space.
"It was for this reason that we decided to support the foundation in building a 60 square-meter treatment centre for them to conduct their treatment sessions."
She expressed hope that the facility will be put into good use in their quest to improve the delivery of effective and efficient care for children living with clubfoot.
“We owe it to every child affected by clubfoot. We must join efforts and ensure clubfoot is no longer a disability.” she stated.
Agnes Nduguye, Miracle Feet Regional Programme Manager for West and Central Africa and Tolga Bermek, Turkish Ambassador to The Gambia, both commended the Foundation for its effort in ensuring clubfoot is corrected in The Gambia.

Gambia Clubfoot Foundation treats over 197 children with clubfoot

The Gambia Clubfoot Foundation has treated over 197 children with clubfoot in the past four years cost free with help of Gambian medical personnel, according to its president Dr. Ibou Camara.
Clubfoot is a congenital deformity that may affect one or both feet. The affected foot or feet are rotated internally. It is a relatively common birth defect occurring in about one in every 1000 live births.
Experts say without treatment, children born with clubfoot often walk on the side or back of their feet.
Speaking to participants during the opening of two-day intensive training on advanced clubfoot treatment, Dr. Camara said: “We have successfully treated about 197 children who were affected with clubfoot at free cost across the country.”
.“This is an achievement that we are proud of. It would have not been achieved without teamwork with medical personnel. We are proud to say we are ambassadors of this country,” he said.
In this regard, he applauded all the medical personnel who contributed immensely to the treatment programme since its inception, while assuring continued working with them to ensure the foundation attains its sustainable development goals in the country.
He said the families that have children with clubfoot do not deserve that. Therefore, he said the citizens are responsible to treat and take care of their people.
“It is an obligation upon the government to provide treatment for anybody with complications as the international health demanded,” he said.
The expert on clubfoot treatment said his organisation is working harder to treat more clubfoot patients and also expand their treatment programme countrywide to ensure all patients get free treatment.
“If we achieve our goals, there will be a time when a child will be born with clubfoot without suffering or struggling to get treatment.
He announced that clubfoot can be treated in the Gambia and all families that have children with this disability can rush to the hospitals for treatment.
