This fire is just adding to the list of propery destroyed recently in Gambia leaving companies and workers with nothing,why is this conflagration becoming more prevalent in Gambia in recent times?

Eight stalls have been consumed by fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Serrekunda.
Pateh Gibba the public relations officer (PRO) of the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services (GFRS) said the incident occurred at around 1 am on Tuesday. He said the Serrekunda GFRS branch was contacted and they rushed to the scene.
He said the fire officers called for reinforcement from Kotu fire station because they were unable to put extinguish the fire. Gibba said they suspected that the fire was caused by some individuals, adding that the police have apprehended one of them. He added that the investigation is ongoing.
Gibba told Foroyaa that the area consumed by the fire is not part of Serrekunda Market, adding the area burnt by the inferno is part of someone’s compound which is closed to the market.
He said they have not quantified the worth of the damage caused by the fire, added the damage was huge.
“The damage caused by the fire was huge,” he said.
Amadou Jallow, a blacksmith told Foroyaa that the incident happened at night while he was at home, adding that when he came in the morning, he did not find anything left at his shop. Jallow said this is his only business and means of work.
“My family and I depend on this shop for our living. As I speak to you, I don’t have anything to give to my family. The fire left me with nothing,” Jallow said.
Other victims of the incident who wish to be anonymous expressed similar sentiment as they all called for support from the government, non-governmental organisations and other philanthropists to come to their aid.

Residents could be seen watching by while the devastating fire consumes the market. Firemen later came in to help doze off the fire, but the fire kept escalating.

Fire outbreaks in commercial areas seem to be becoming an increasingly regular part of our lives, especially in congested urban spaces. It is in the news that Basse central market in the Upper River Region on Monday night went up in flames. It is fortunate that in this case, loss of life was avoided.
The inferno, according to many, is one of the worst disasters ever in the history of the town. However, the cause of the fire still remains unknown, but many believe that the fire may have started as a result of an electrical short circuit.
Following a rapid assessment conducted by concerned authorities, the colossal damage caused stands at D571, 597,000,551. Over 300 stalls have been destroyed.
Poor electrical short circuits, is one of the leading causes of fire outbreaks in the country. It is high time landlords and that in-charge of public markets and offices see how best to tackle this menace. Yes, it is possible to avoid such occurrences.
Also, the reasons behind why fires cause so much damage include the lack of fire-fighting equipment installed in commercial establishments which includes hydrant, a fitting in a street or other public place, where water can be assessed.
It is unfortunate that the entire market as busy as Basse Central market surrounding has no fire hydrant. Lack of this facility even made it difficult for fire fighters to battle the raging inferno. In this these if facility was in place the extent of the damage could have been minimised.
Therefore, it is especially vital that fire safety measures be followed in public markets, offices and even buildings and raise awareness about the need to implement steps which can prevent major hazards, including the installation of safety fire gadgets and hydrants and even smoke alarms.
We should bear in mind that our urban areas are rapidly expanding and are witnessing increased commercialisation. It is important that our infrastructure, buildings and fire-fighting capabilities keep up with these rapid developments.
We want to extent heartfelt sympathy to all those who are affected in one way or the other.

Goo job Lt Colonel Ebrima Krubally, GAF and villagers in tackling the bushfire,this article is a "clarification" of the information given by the PRO in the posting above, as edveryone else was firefighting and the press wanted to tell the public what was happening.

Gambia Armed Forces Four Infantry Battalion Commander in Kanilai has confirmed that his forces, firefighters and villagers came together to extinguish the bushfire that burnt the former Gambian leader’s farm and park.
The bushfire which started from Allakunda spread to Kanilai burning the former Gambian leader’s mango and cashew plantations, part of the palm oil farm, the warehouse in the farm and one of the pavilions in the mini stadium.
Lt Colonel Ebrima Krubally said: “We had to switch off the electricity here so that the fire will not spread to the village. We used the branches of trees to extinguish the fire. The Fire and Rescue Service did not have the necessary equipment to respond to this situation. Only one of their fire tenders was working and it has capacity to carry only 800 litres of fuel.”
Jalamang Jammeh brother to the former Gambian leader rubbished reports that some animals including cattle and donkeys died as a result of the fire outbreak.
Jammeh said: “No person or animal died as a result of the fire incident. The fire did not spread to Yaya Jammeh’s house (mansion). We all came together to extinguish the fire. It was a difficult task, but we were able to contain the situation. We experience bushfire every year, but this one is very serious. Its magnitude is not in any closed to what we used to experience here. I am sad because the grass field where my cattle used to graze has been consumed by the fire. I do not have the means to buy hay to feed my animals.”
Jerreh Colley a ranger in the park confirmed that all the animals were safe.
Colley said: “The hyenas, the crocodiles, the birds, zebras and other animals are safe.”
The grass and trees closed to the crocodile ponds were burnt, but the crocodiles were seen diving in the pond.
Colley, who was smiling while looking at the hyenas, said the animals were hungry and needed food.

A mysterious fire outbreak on Tuesday and Wednesday ravaged bushes and parts of the surroundings of Kanilai, the home village of former president Yahya Jammeh.
The fire, which reportedly started in nearby Alaa-Kunda was initially controlled by the soldiers posted at the village by Tuesday night. However according to military sources, the fire continued to burn from Wednesday morning, engulfing and eating up some parts of Jammeh’s house and one of the pavilions at the Kanilai mini stadium.
The army PRO Lamin Sanyang told The Standard yesterday that the fire entered through Woni, where the former president’s house is located.
He said with the help of fire fighters stationed in Kanilai, GAF soldiers and residents of Woni, the fire was put off by nightfall.
But to their surprise, the fire restarted all over again Wednesday afternoon.
“Our soldiers are reporting that the fire is still raging and getting out of control. There have been no casualties so far but some of the houses, including the fore house, in former president Jammeh’s compound have been gutted by the fire,” the PRO said yesterday.

It's a good idea  BUT........... it is self evident that small shopkeepers who are just surviving on their sales would not be able to buy the necessary equipment to comply with the law & regulations that would apply,as figures realeased today show that the cost of essential food products has increased from last year  ,observations Dear Reader by posting on this topic .

QUESTION OF THE DAY January 8, 2020
The public is exposed to many talks about disaster management. Fire however is the greatest cause of loss of property in the country. It has no season and affects every region in the country. It is strange that public places are hardly equipped with fire extinguishers in order to fight fire when it is weak and could be easily extinguished before it consumes a whole building. There should be a policy of providing fire extinguishers in public places and people be trained on firefighting so that fire incidents could be managed or controlled.
