The director-general of the Gambia Tourist Board has issued a warning signal to all estate agents, developers and land buyers who are buying landed properties across the Tourism Development Area (TDA).

He warned that all lands sold to individuals by the estate agents across the TDA will be reverted to government in due time.

Abdoullahi Hydara, in an interview with The Point said The Gambia Tourism Board has never authorized any estate agent to sell or issue land to anybody and “the Gambia Tourism Board itself has no mandate to sell land – the guidelines and policies laid down for the board is to allocate land based.”

Responding to questions on GTBoard’s press release in which some estate entities were accused of encroaching into TDA, Mr. Hydara said that GTBoard does not sell land and whoever bought a property within the TDA from any of those agents should ensure that they recover their monies from them because “we cannot regularize property or properties that are bought through estate agents.”

Mr. Hydara said that his institution is very much concerned about individuals who have been ripped off their hard-earned monies by estate agencies who sell properties they do not own. He added that “as far back as October 2018, we have met and had meetings with some of the investors, the estate agents,” on this issue.

To those estate agents contacting the board for regularization, he said, hence GTBoard has no mandate to sell land in TDA, there is nothing they could do to regularize. “You are somewhere that you are not supposed to be and you have no authority to do so.”

He blamed the estate agents for selling land within TDA, saying they are not honest with their clients as they did not tell them that they did not have authority to sell such lands. He added that GTBoard has no other option but to ensure that the lands are reverted to government.

GTBoard DG explained further that over the last 12 and 18 months, GTBoard has received complaints from quite a number of people who were misled to buy lands across the TDA and they wanted to ensure that documentations are completed but they got stuck. “Those that are selling do not have legitimate rights to sell or assign any of the properties to anybody.” He thus advised them recover their monies from the sellers as GTBoard cannot regularize properties bought from estate agents.
