It might not be a strange thing to see a non-functioning facility at an airport but it becomes annoying when it takes too much time for repairs or regular maintenance without taking into consideration its importance to those that use such facility.

Passengers arriving at the Banjul International Airport and some tour operators’ staff are not happy about the malfunction of one of the carousels at the airport as passengers are always delayed to pick their baggage for scanning and to leave the arrival hall.

This condition of the carousel at the Banjul International Airport which started sometime ago has still not been repaired. Passengers say it is causing a nightmare especially on days when there is a simultaneous landing of flights in the ongoing peak season.

A staff from one of the tour operators firm, lamented that “it is understandable when a facility is not in a good condition, but it becomes an issue when the concerned authority don’t take appropriate action to remedy the situation” especially at the only airport for that matter.

Cornwall, a repeat tourist in Destination Gambia, said: “Something needs to be done about the Banjul International Airport, every season there is something to complain about; in 2017 it was scanning machine, now it’s the carousel.”

"To enhance check and balance mechanism, “the carousel is operated by two departments – the engineering and operational departments and their different logs did not show malfunction of any carousel.”

So MAYBE,interdepartmental jelousy or Worker dissatisfaction, as things are back to full working order !!

The power of the press can bring quick results in some cases,we will never know the true case of "The problem"

Officials of the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority have debunked claims made by passengers who talked to The Point about the condition of a carousel machine at the airport.

A conducted tour of all the carousels by this reporter accompanied by the public relations manager of GCAA and team of engineers on Thursday morning at the Banjul International Airport terminal confirmed the perfect and good condition of all the carousels.

In a brief interview, Lamin Dibba, the public relations manager of Gambia Civil Aviation Authority explained that there was operating procedures in airports as a ‘demand to use two carousels (at same time) is to be dictated by the passenger figures expected to be processed per flight.’ For better understanding, using two carousels at a go for a processed flight which does not demand it will complicate activities and will confuse passengers.”

To avoid getting passengers confused, he said: “that is why usage of carousel is highly dictated by the passengers figure process as they (passengers) are coming.” He explained that if a carousel or other facilities are lying redundant while others are working; it is not an indication that such facilities are not working.

Mr. Dibba further stated that any concerned passenger that might witness such a facility not operating at a moment should take time to make an inquiry, as necessary information on such facility will be given.

He disclosed that management is always around at the airport to see the operations on ground. “We verify what staffs on ground are doing and hear what they have to say to us (management).”
