Posted - 28 Jan 2014 : 11:46:25 Gambian dies in Libya
By Sainey Darboe
Foroyaa: Published on Monday, 27 January 2014 A Gambian man from Badibu, Lamin Saidy, Monday 20th January passed away in a Tripoli hospital after being brutalized, a family source has informed Foroyaa newspaper. His mortal remains were interred last week by his friends and compatriots under the crust of the Libyan soil due to the logistical nightmare of flying his body back home.
The source said, “It was just today that we received a call from the man with whom he has been staying in Libya. He informed us that Lamin was released just a week ago; but due to the torture meted out to him while in detention, he passed away in hospital. He has sadly died of the effects of the cruel treatment. He has left behind him in this world a wife and one child”.
Describing him as “very quiet ,pious and respectful” the family source added that the late Lamin Saidy had lived in Libya for three years in his quest to illegally migrate by rickety and overcrowded boats to Italy in search of better opportunities so as to wrench his family from the clutches of poverty.

Posted - 29 Jan 2014 : 21:00:14 Foreign Affairs Ministry Staff on Demise of a Gambian in Libya
By Alhagie F.S Sora Published on Wednesday, 29 January 2014
Sequel to publication on the Foroyaa newspaper Monday edition of issue No. 017/2014 which reported the demise of one Lamin Saidy in a Libyan medical facility following inhuman treatment meted out on him by that country’s security agents, this reporter went to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Banjul with a view to feeling the pulse of the authorities on the matter.
Saidy who hailed from Baddibou was said to have been hospitalized in one of the health facilities after he was released from prison by Libyan security agents. This reporter Tuesday 28 January 2014 visited the Ministry of Foreign and was told by the Director of Protocol who was on his way out of his office that he is not aware of the demise of Lamin Saidy. The director added that both the minister and permanent secretary at the said ministry are all attending an African Union Summit in Addis Ababa. He further advised this reporter to return when the duo is back from their trip.

Posted - 29 Jan 2014 : 15:58:00 I have just discovered that a good friend of mine left Gambia 4 months ago and is now holed up somewhere in Libya. He is in infrequent contact with his brother who lives in Serrekunda by phone. It seems that maybe one phone is being used by many people who have retained their sim cards so the number he has been using is not always contactable. He leaves a wife and his 3 children back in the Gambia. From what I have learnt his wife did not try to stop him going but she wants him to return. She has not been able to talk to him. His brother has spent thousands of dalasi helping him to get to Libya even though he doesn't think he should have left Gambia. What will happen to him I don't know but even if he gets to Italy what are his prospects? He is not well educated ,his English is not brilliant and he speaks no Italian.I can only hope that he is alive and well at the moment. |
