Foroyaa National News Alhaji A.M Sering Secka launches three Books

Three books were officially launched on Friday 2 May 2014 at Alliance Francaise Banjul. The books were professionally titled with design covers and mature contents namely:

A History of the Banjul Central Mosque Imams and Bilals (1900-2013) with pages printed and published in 2014.

The second book entitled the Tragedy of Masanneh Ceesay (Three Act Play) was first written and staged in 1972 in the Gambia and Senegal and printed and published in 2013 with 42 pages.

The third book entitled the short plays (Fippu Pakala, A Letter to God, Hiv and Aids in the family) printed and published in 2014 with eighty-six pages.

The opening ceremony started at 5:00pm and the Permanent Secretary of Tourism and Culture, Mr. Modou Joof, spoke at the launch. A National Aids Secretariat official did a review of the Aids Epidemic, Patience Sonko Godwin Historian and author did a review of Masanneh Ceesay while Mr. Hassoum Ceesay Director of copyright (NCAC) did a review of Fippu Pakala and a letter to God. The launching ceremony was also graced by dignitaries of different ministries, former minister of foreign affairs, Honourable Susan Waffa Ogoo, Imams and Bilals, friends and family members, Director of performing and fine arts Mr. Sheikh Omar Jallow (NCAC) as the host master of the ceremony and invited media houses.

The man behind the scene and the author of the three books Sheikh Alhaji Abdulla Makura Sering Secka was born in Bathurst (Banjul) on 5 October 1932 at number 15 Angelsea Street Banjul. Mr. Secka participated in different fields.

He first worked as a store clerk and assistant store keeper with the well-known firm CFAO and Elder Demstar Shipping Company before serving the Gambia government civil service where he worked in many departments before his early retirement in 1986 as Assistant Tourism officer.

He holds certificates in youth leadership from the state of Israel, tourism development and product control from the Republic of Ireland and Handy Craft development and control from the Royal Kingdom of Morocco.

He also founded the famous Safari Tours and Secka Setal and Services and serve as the Honorary Life President of the visually impaired GOVI and a member of the committee of Banjul Muslim elders among other similar Islamic responsibilities in the Greater Banjul Area.

The author also gave his remarks during the launching ceremony. “This day of launching marks a record history to my life time achievement and contribution towards great scholars and warriors of Islam. Our history is awakened again and society and its activities are also reviewed for the young and the old. That was the main purpose of composing these books.

I will express my gratitude for the support given by the NCAC officials, National Aids Secretariat, committee of Banjul Muslim elders, historians, veteran writers, family members and friends; for the gathering of information, research and contribution of publication and printing process and to those who also patronized the sale of the books during the launching ceremony.

Alhaji A.M Sering Secka said the younger generation have the chance to research and gather information very easily “as nowadays we are living in an electronic world with the availability of computers and the internet.”

He indicated that once one becomes a bookworm, a reader and a writer is always a leader that rules his or her own democratic destiny.
