Liberia students all fail university admission exam

Liberia's education minister says she finds it hard to believe that not a single candidate passed this year's university admission exam.
Nearly 25,000 school-leavers failed the test for admission to the University of Liberia, one of two state-run universities.
The students lacked enthusiasm and did not have a basic grasp of English, a university official told the BBC.
Liberia is recovering from a brutal civil war that ended a decade ago.

Pisa tests: UK stagnates as Shanghai tops league table
... The UK is falling behind global rivals in international tests taken by 15-year-olds, failing to make the top 20 in maths, reading and science.
England's Education Secretary Michael Gove said since the 1990s, test performances had been "at best stagnant, at worst declining".
Shanghai in China is the top education system in the OECD's Pisa tests.
Within the UK, Scotland outperformed England at maths and reading, but Wales is below average in all subjects..... |

War affects all areas,... its going to take some time but am confident Liberia is on the right tract to recovery. |

Responding to critics who accuse her of failing to improve education standards since she was elected president in 2005, Ms Sirleaf said: "I'm sorry, they're just dead wrong.... There's no quick fix."
An African Leader who is not afraid to reach an agreement by negotiation,I think I like this lady a lot from what has been published she appears to be able to do great things for her country.
"School enrolment had "quadrupled" under her government, she said.
"The second phase now is quality education. That's a more difficult task," Ms Sirleaf told the BBC.
"You've got thousands of teachers in our school system, some of them with only a high school education. You don't turn that over in three or four or five years," she added." |

Liberia university to 'admit' some failed students

Liberia's main state-run university has agreed to admit 1,800 school-leavers who failed this year's admission exam, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says.
Ms Sirleaf told the BBC she had held talks with officials at the University of Liberia over the failure of every single candidate who took the exam.
Nearly 25,000 school leavers failed the test, with officials saying they did not have a basic grasp of English.
Liberia is recovering from a brutal civil war that ended a decade ago.

Although these figures are a real shock to everyone,I THINK that it exposes and highlights a primary flaw in the availability of GOOD education for MOST of the citizens of MANY African countries,and as such is a good thing,as the article states "It means that the overcrowded university will not have any new first-year students when it reopens next month for the academic year." IN MY OPINION ,unfortunately demonstrates that the quality of education available at the university AT PRESENT is not fit for purpose.
I am not happy to write the above paragraph,I come from a different culture and have a different perspective on life, living as I do in the Western world were education at a primary and secondary level is vastly different to that available in MOST countries of Africa.
There is no right or wrong to "education" which comprises of great skills handed down from generation to generation in making things,growing food,living in the place you call home to an acceptable level and maintaing traditional ways,however if your aim in life is to keep up with developments in the western world then MAYBE you should consider doing things differently.
