Gambia ligger i Vestafrika langs floden Gambia. Landet er omgivet af Senegal mod nord, syd og øst og har kyst mod Atlanterhavet i vest.

Historie i korte træk

Områdets historie er præget af handel, migration og forbindelser til Vestafrikas større riger. Europæisk handel og britisk kolonistyre satte senere deres præg på landet. Gambia blev selvstændigt den 18. februar 1965 og en republik i 1970.

Kultur og samfund

Flere sproggrupper lever side om side, og familie, fællesskab, musik og landbrug spiller en vigtig rolle i hverdagen. Gambia og Senegal har tætte historiske og kulturelle forbindelser.
