The Senegambia Confederation agreement

Summary

The agreement signed in Dakar on 17 December 1981 set out a framework for a confederation between The Gambia and Senegal. Each state was to retain its independence and sovereignty.

Areas of cooperation

The agreement proposed closer defence and security arrangements, economic and monetary cooperation, and coordination in foreign policy, communications and other fields.

Institutions and implementation

It established a confederal institutional framework and provided for further protocols to develop the arrangements. The text also addressed amendments, deposits of the agreement and the equal authenticity of its English and French versions.
