An Excellent move BUT most importantly I PERSONALLY THINK, there MUST be a "culture change" education programme developed that can run alongside this crime resolving iniative by the government,to highlight the point that to steal, rip off,not to tell the truth etc is wrong.

Transparency and Accountability in the Police
By Madi Jobarteh

It is indeed gratifying, reassuring and progressive that the Police High Command made this remark in its statement,

“The public is assured that, the conduct of the security personnel shall be strictly within the confines of the Law. To ensure this, the Police High Command has instituted a strong Inspectorate Unit to regularly supervise and monitor the activities of security personnel, in a bid to ensure respect for human rights and the rule of Law.”

This is the crux of the matter. It shows that the police is aware of their duty and powers and that they must be accountable. As a human rights protection body it is just natural that human rights and adherence to the rule of law are always in the centre and front of their work!

Without accountability we cannot guarantee success and results. It is only when we institute accountability systems and enforce them that we will succeed in having a professional, effective and results oriented police hence combat crime effectively.

The Police High Command should go further to share numbers and contacts points in the police with the general public to report any cases of police misconduct.

Who is in charge of this Inspectorate Unit? How does one contact them if you are in Boraba or Basse or Kerewan or Banjul etc? What are their numbers or emails? Where are their offices? How does one lodge a complaint? Etc. etc. etc.

Then the police must make sure periodically to announce to the public the complaints they have received from the public and which ones were addressed or not and why. The list of officers who have been sanctioned must be named as well. Etc. etc. etc.

This is the kind of transparency and accountability that will cleanse the police off of bad cops and misconduct. That is what helps the political to become a truly people’s service!

Keep up the good work.

This initiative appears to be successful with many suspects arrested and being processed and maybe appearing before the Courts,as i mentioned before in a previous posting here that an education programme should run in conjuuction with this, culture change that is underway in Gambia,do not let these changes be tossed into the long grass and get forgotten due to "delays and inaction".
